Message: a few years ago I drove a 2000 Dakota extended cab 4x4 with the 4.7L Automatic and 3:55 gears. This truck would haul. Great power. It would spin the tires from a stop if not carefull. I really liked this truck. Now I bought a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab 2WD with the 4.7L 5 speed manual and the 3:55 gears. This truck feels like a slug up till about 3000+ RPM's. It only has 30000 miles. It appears that the previous owner took great care of it. But what gives this is not the vehicle that I remember. Is there that much a difference between years, or is the manual trans just make is like this? Please help. I like to have some low end power.

Message: I bet it's cause of the torque converter on the automatic transmission... it makes the biggest difference from a full stop because it lets the engine wind up some before planting power to the ground.
I've got the 318v8 with an automatic. From a full stop I can leave a pretty big white cloud of smoke... Once the truck is moving the wheels dont' break lose anymore.
It's definitely not the best thing for your tranny, but I bet if you "drive the truck like you stole it" it might bring it to life a bit :-)
If you try revving up the engine a bit and let the clutch out hard, it would probably give you the same wheel spin a torque converter would.

Message: This would make sense. I am not trying to smoke the tires or anything. I just feel its a slug from a stop. How can I fix this without harming the engine?

Message: I've got the same truck but Auto, I never have any problems with excellerating, before or after I installed a magnaflow exhaust and 360 air intake. I'm 5 miles away from 40,000 on the odo and it's still runnin' like a champ.

Message: I have a 2001 r/t, my truck was also sluggish off the line. I bought a superchips programer and my truck came to life! I belive that 4x4 and 4x2 dakotas have differnt programs(in the computer) due to the weight differnce.
Also, if you don't want to spend the money on a programer you can ask a dodge dealer(if you know someone)to program your ECM as if it was a full size dodge truck. Dodge uses the same computers in all trucks, just differnt programs.
I had this done before I bought the programer.

Message: Darrell,
Cool, I've heard people talking about re-programming the computer before but have never talked to anybody that did it. I've heard that it uses more gas and am wondering what it would do to mileage...
-Can you still use regular gas, or does hi-test work better?
-How is mileage after the mod?
- What kind of stuff can you tweak (air/fuel, timing, shift points, etc???)

Message: FloriDak,
Superchips only programs for more power on 91 octane and higher. They change shift points, rev limiter, speed limiter; you can choose between towing or performance. On our trucks there isn't any change in transmission shifts. Our trans are not computer controlled(5.2 or 5.9, but 4.7 and 5.7 trans are), only overdrive, torque converter lock up, and pressure govener are electronicly controlled. The only way to improve shifts is to have the trans built or install shift kit. I had just had my trans built by a Dodge dealer(under wannanty). As far as tweaking goes all mods are preset on superchips. I have just done the re-program so I am not sure of the fuel milage increase, but I am getting better milage.
With more power from same injecters, you sould see increase in milage as long as you keep your foot out of it.
