Message: Sure its an electrical problem ? For a motor that dies but will start back up, first thing I'd look for is a dirty gas filter.

Message: Sounds like it could be a distributer or timing issue. Possibly may need to have the computer checked. I had an S-10 that did the same thing, it was a faulty distributer. $300 dollars later the thing was as good as new.
just my .02 cents worth.

Message: thanks for some honest responses guys, and yes pretty sure its not a fuel problem as we've got fuel up at the fuel rail and there is no spark at the coil.could be dist prob though, replaced the pick-up and that diden't do it. we're told those go out pretty often. anyway thanks, got some other advice to check the wiring at the computor so will be trying that.

Message: No spark huh,
Well several things come to mind.
1. See if the grounding cable for your block is ok or just connect a wire from the block directly to the negative side of the battery terminal. If, that's ok. You need to rent or borrow a scan tool from like one of the automotive place like (Checkers, autozone, etc.) Some rent them out for free.
2. If, your engine cranks over, it can't be the battery. The next step is the computer. The computer sends the voltage required to the coil to fire your spark plugs. This can only be verified by a scan tool you got from one of the local automotive places.
3. A computer relay, don't know if the dodges have one of these, but it was the problem on my VW. I wasn't gettin spark either. You may want to call the dodge dealer to see if one is avaliable for your truck. If, it is. Then, that could be your problem.
If, the above mentioned and the mechanic didn't work. You need to purchase a "For Sale" sign at your local Wal-Mart and buy an add in the local Auto Trader.
These are my suggestions.

Message: It could also be a cracked distributor cap, or cracked rotor.
It could be bad plug wires.
Did you check of spark on all 8 cylinders?
easiest to check, get a extra spark plug, hold it to the block. Another way to check for proper grounding, get a cable that is long enough to reach the negative battery terminal. hold the threaded part of the spark plug to the terminal. Have someone start it. If you see a spark, but did not see one when your holding it to the block. Then, there's your problem, faulty ground wire either to the block or the negative terminal to your frame.

Message: Check or replace the crank position sensor on the left side of the engine near the firewall in transmission bell housing behing the EGR tube to the exhaust manifold.
The PCM need to see an input from the distributor pickup (known as fuel sync) or from the crank position sensor, if it does not it will activate the ASD Auto Shutdown Relay. Either sensor being bad will cause a problem.

Message: thanks guys i'm wondering about that crank position sensor but we actually had that replaced about a year ago.what do you think would make that go bad again?we did replace the dist. pickup.the crank one is another 109.00 and i was not sure if we should go ahead and try that or not. something to think about. can you check that with the ohm meter/volt meter or whatever? thanks

Message: Crank position sensor and dizzy pick up plate are a good place to start.
Also, check your wiring harness on the driver's side, about a foot to a foot and a half from your firewall. The wires you are looking for are pink/white. Notorious for corroding. You'll see it if they are bad.
Another thing to check is your coil harness. Make sure it's good, and check that it's not grounding against your block. Mine went bad, and caused a problem similar to what you are describing.

Message: just wanted to post a follow-up to the problem we were having with our 93 dodge. after replacing the crank position and cam position sensors and a new coil and checking the wiring ,we had a mechanic friend of our neighbors come over and for 30.00 he determined that everthing was working like it should but still no spark. he figured it had to be the computer,it has the ignition modual in it ,he pounded on it while we cranked it over and it tried to start.anyway sure enough 200.00 later plus the 150.00 we already put out the truck is back on the road.hope this post helps somebody else in the future and thanks again for all the advice we got, wendy
