Message: Anyone ever had any issues with the ECT sensor on their truck? I'm casting suspect towards this sensor after doing some research on the internet, or maybe a MAP sensor problem. I can't get any help from the dealers. They don't want to dig in and find the problem, they have the "No check engine light, no problem" mentality. The truck seems to be running rich. There is a substantial amount of black soot inside of the tailpipes. The truck seems to lack power and momentarily lays down at 3000 RPM. The O2 sensors have been replaced, but this did not help. Anyone know what the ECT sensor should read cold and hot?

Message: Pop out the map sensor and check the end for carbon build up. It may be plugged. Also take your dvom and check the tps sensor. Put it on ohms reading and probe the sensor of course unplugged, and sweep through it, It may be going open and causing the stumble.

Message: just be careful with the screws, when you take out the MAP sensor! I almost dropped one when I took my map sensor out to clean it... It (knock on wood) has stopped my cold starting woes! when my dak had been sitting for sevral hours (6-8+) it would idle like crap for about 15 seconds and recover... it would almost STALL, and hesitated badly!! I already dod the easy stuff (plugs, clean TB, clean IAC, check TPS sensor/did tps sensor mod) So I popped the map sensor out (with a torx t-20 bit) and sprayed some carb cleaner down inside it. you should have seen the crud that came out! i gave it 5 good blasts with carb cleaner, before it came out clean. If my problem comes back, I'm looking into the engine coolant temp sensor next....

Message: Now that is the kind of information I was looking for!! Thanks!
Gizmodog, I've checked the TPS and it seems OK. I dont think it is the problem. When I foot it, the truck will jerk when going WOT. After this, then it will hesitate around the 3k RPM range. When the motor is lugged at a low RPM (5-speed) while making a turn or slow traffic, the engine has a hesitation when trying to power up to speed.
Daffydak, what issues made you look to the MAP sensor for problems? I took mine out and looked at it. I didn't spray anything into it tho. I will take it back out and give your technique a try.
Thanks again guys!

Message: my truck ran fine other then the rough idle/near stalling on cold starting (sitting for 8+ hours)
It smelled really rich as it was running rough, and sounded like it had a HUGE cam(s) in it.. this would go on for about 10-15 seconds, and the PCM would freak out and rev up (to around 1100 or so) and fall back to idle.... and it had about a .5 second delay from idle, if you tapped the gas(in or out of gear).
I will let you know if my problem happens again this morning. I hope it stays away :-) it didn't do it yesterday when I started it, I hope it wasn't a fluke...

Message: I called my friend at the Dodge Dealer where I used to wrench at , and it appears that he has had a couple of these problems, one was a Coolant temp sensor that would not switch up properly (they have two thermistors in them, and the second one was a stuck check valve in the fuel pump causing a slight overrich condtion. You may want to check these two areas once you verify the tps and map sensors are doing there job.

Message: Daffydak, this is my third Dak. The first one was a 98 with the 318. The second and this one are 4.7s. All three had/have cold start hesitation.
Gizmodog, I'm gonna check the TPS again today. I used a digital meter before. This time I'm gonna use my analog meter. As far as the fuel pump goes, I've checked it with a fuel pressure gauge. I checked it running, with the key on/engine off and with the key off after letting the system pressurize. I didn't notice any leak down after shutting off the ignition.

Message: it made it MUCH better. its still there, but no where near as prevalant..... it only idles funky for less then 3 seconds now... I don't know if you could damage the MAP sensor by spraying it out, So don't get all bent at me it the spray happens to F up your sensor! I just decided what the hell, i didn't think it would hurt anything :-)

Message: OK, I know that this thread is old, but I may have gotten the problem fixed! I took the truck to the dealership for them to take a look. Did the night drop-off. I called this AM and she said that they replaced the cam sensor. I would've never suspected. I was thinking TPS, MAP, or ECT sensors. Anyone else had to have this sensor replaced? Check my symptoms in the previous entries. If you're having any of these, may be worth a look-see!

Message: 2002 Dodge Dakota 4.7 engine very hard to start in morning or after sitting for1 hour or more.
It will crank and crank for 8-10 seconds or 3-4 shorter attemps before starting.
When it does start there is a strong smell of gas
and runs rough for 5-10 seconds. It runs perfectly
after.
