Subject: Please help! Having tranny issues! IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys,
I have a 1992 2WD dak, 5.2, auto, with about 120K on it. I have been having some weird issues with this truck. At times the truck will die on mewhile moving down the road, also when sitting a a stop light it will idle fine but when I tap the gas it boggs down and dies. As if it's geting too much fuel. I have been having to drive around with my foot on the gas and the other on the brake to keep it from stalling.
Next problem is with the tranny(seemingly). While I'm driving the tranny will down shift for no particular reason. Sometimes it will just drop out of overdrive, but others it will shift all the way to 2nd gear. As you can imagine this would cause problems at highway speeds.
I have been reading alot of posts on this site, and seem to have come to the conclusion that it may be the ECU/PCM, or maybe the corroded wire splice issue. I have read that daks of this age tend to have ECU/PCM issues with some regularity.
Does anyone think I'm on the right track? I also need a link for the wire splice issue if anyone has it. I want to check that first, so I don't buy a PCM I don't need. Thanks!!!

Message: Sounds like a failing speed sensor, also check the distributor bushing in the block.

Message: Forgot to mention that I checked the PCM codes and I was getting a code 22. Something to do with a coolant sensor or something. Do you think this has anything to do with it?

Message: Did you you check the TPS voltage? Have you cleaned the throttle body lately? It sounds like you have more than one issue.

Message: Ok the speed sensor has classic signs to check for.
1. is the speedometer reading correctly
2. Does the cruise work perfectly and I mean perfectly
The distributor bushing was a known problem for 92 and gives many of the symptoms you have.
The TPS could do some of those also

Message: Rob,
I definatly think there are 2 issues. I have a stalling/starting issue(IAC/AIS motor I think), and the tranny issue.
Yes I cleaned the throttle body as best as I could a few weeks ago. Seemed to help for a while but then the symptoms returned as far as the stalling goes. I have not checked the TPS voltage yet. Do you know what range it should be in?
JJJ,
The speedometer does read correctly. I have not tried the cruise since this particular issue has come up.
Driving home from work the tranny was really having a bad time. After an inital 10 min. driving warm-up, the tranny was shifting up and down evry 5 seconds or so. My speed was staying constant the whole time(around 55), but the tach would jump from 2100 to near 3k each time. Oh, Do you know where the VSS is located on the tranny? I want to at least take a visual inspection if possible, see if there is anything obvious.
Thanks guys for all of your help!

Message: The VSS is right on the trans tail where the speedo cable goes in. Driver side.

Message: Update. I removed the throttle body and cleaned it throughly. Also replaced the IAC on the TB. It didn't fix the stalling issue I have. Will be testing the TPS soon. It still dies on me though it does seem to be easier to crank after it dies. Anyone with thoughts?

Message: While the PCM may be to blame for overdrive issues, it has no effect on 1,2, and 3rd gear so something mechanical must also be involved. Check the kickdown cable. Sometimes the plastic will break near the throttle body. If so, or loose, either situation will cause premature kickdown.
