Does anyone know what kind of fluid I should use for my 2000 4.7 5-speed tranny? Also, what is the fluid change schedule for this?

I have a 2002 Dakota 4.7 5spd, and looked and looked, and finally found something that will work. You need something that can be used for Chrysler Part # 4874464 (Specification MS-9224), and the only one I found it's the Pennzoil Synchromesh. You can order it online from Autozone or Advance Autoparts, or look around at your local stores (I found two bottles at one Autozone, but was the only place where they had it, out of about 5 stores in town).
I think you're supposed to change the fluid every 36K miles.
One bottle is about 5 bucks.

Good luck!

The simple answer is ATF+4 which is a semi-synthetic. For some reason, Mobil One Synthetic does not have a Chrysler rating, but I talked to a transmission builder and asked why I couldn't use it. He said that it's better than ATF+4 and that he recommends using it instead. I've been using it ever since (about 2 yrs) with no problems. Amsoil is Chrysler rated, if you want a synthetic and don't feel comfortable using Mobil One.

Amsoil Retail or Amsoil Preferred Customer Amzoil
IP: Logged

Message:

Some PEP Boys may be carrying some Amsoil products.

Amsoil in a Retail Store or Amsoil at Wholsale Prices?

Some retail stores (Canadian Tire, some NAPA stores, maybe a few PEP Boys, Performance Shops, and others) are beginning to carry Amsoil. So are some Dodge Dealerships! Unfortunately, they carry a limited seclection of Amsoil products and sometimes their retial price is MORE than the Amsoil suggested retail price.

Retail Stores and Dodge Dealerships are only carrying a limited number of Amsoil products and I believe only in the quart sizes. No larger quantities like case discounts, gallons or barrels, ... No Amsoil Filters, ATF, Greases, Specialty Oils, Gear Lubes, or Truck Care Products. So anyone interested in the complete line of Amsoil products still need to request a FREE Amsoil Catalog.

Why pay retail (or sometimes even prices higher than Amsoil's suggested retail pricing) when you can become an Amsoil Preferred Customer and save between 20% and 25% across the board on all retail prices ... direct from the catalog ... buying at the same wholesale prices as an Amsoil Dealer.

Here is the rub ...

Retail Stores, etc., are doing what we call High Grading or High Ending ... selling only Amsoil's best and fastest movers in a retail outlet ... and leaving the rest of the product line to dealers who have put a lot of time, effort and money into understanding and educating themselves on the complete Amsoil product line ... making Amsoil what it is today, a recognized Industry Leader, a recognized label and a superior product.

Anyone interested in requesting a FREE Amsoil Catalog or becoming an Amsoil Preferred Customer can click the link at the bottom of this thread and Request a FREE Amsoil Catalog.

DODGE DEALERSHIPS NOW CARRY AMSOIL !!!

This was posted by Sephiroth 3/20/2004
V8 Forum --- Subject: New Chrysler Product?!

Message posted by Sephiroth:

"I went in to have my brakes checked today, and when I walked into the garage the first thing I saw made my jaw hit the floor. My local dealership now uses and sells AMSOIL products!! They've got it posted on a big banner over the service-desks. GM may not have been able to get it for their 'vettes, but obviously Dodge was able to, or they found out how awesome it is and started buying at regular price! When I go in for a tranny-filter, fluid, and gasket change next week, it's getting filled with AMSOIL."

Sephiroth went on to state:

"This is at the Raleigh, NC dealership, Al Smith Buick, Dodge, Mazda. I told the guy at the desk I was astounded to see them using AMSOIL and that I had been using it for a while now. After he rode in the truck he said he'd be switching next oil-change in his Ram.

As for me, I've got it in the engine, and I'll have it in the tranny soon! Next up are the differentials. After that I need to get a dyno just for curiosity's sake. IF I get 3-5hp form the differential, and God knows how much from the engine and tranny, that'll be enough without any heavy mods. Well, for all I do anyway. If it is a significant gain, I'll post the results."

... and as part of the same thread jeremiah2360 stated:

"Norwood (MA) Dodge sells Amsoil too."

__________________________________________________

Dodge Dealerships are beginning to realize that Amsoil offers a FULL LINE of Premium Synthetic Lubricants and Dodge Dealerships are beginning to offer Amsoil.

Why ...

1) Dodge knows Amsoil meets AND exceeds Dodge's requirements.
2) Because their customers are asking for Amsoil.
3) Amsoil = 30 Year History of Research and Development
4) Amsoil offers the best Synthetic Lubricants

I use redline MTL in my NV-3500.

I've tried the mopar "special" fluid, as well as Amsoil
5w-30 AND HDD 5w-30. I'd rank shift quality in the
following order (best to last);

1.REDLINE MTL
2.MOPAR
3.AMSOIL 5/30
4.AMSOIL HDD 3/30

I order the MTL from summitracing.com and it's at my
door two days later. You'll need two quarts.
