Message:
I resently purchased a 97 5.2 CC R/T and would like to run true duals, but my local muffler shop says they can not make the duals work because the o2 sensor is located after the cat and it can not be located in a crossover pipe due to the odb-ll computer system.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Others have located the 02 sensor in the crossover and done just fine. Like Kris said it is not a factory R/T, somebody just put some stickers on it. If a dealer sold you this truck and represented it as an R/T then it would be considered a form a fraud. If it were sold as a "clone" with that knowledge up front, then it's no big deal. The only factory R/Ts out there are 98-2002, RC or CC, 4x2, 360, automatics. The 8th digit in the VIN needs to be a "Z", and the 5th digit a "L".

For those of you that had positive info on the exhuast and R/T info thanks.
For those with smartass remarks, try to grow up,
I came to this site looking for positive help, like other Dakota owners and I don't find fraud a joking matter....

Now, if someone can direct me to a site for decoding my VIN #, your help would be appreciated or if someone can decode the VIN# on my truck, which is 1B7GL23Y7VS257607 that would be helpful.

The truck was purchased from a Dodge dealer as an R/T and if it definitley is not one of those RARE cases where Dodge slipped up, then the dealer is in it up to its' neck in it.

Nope, not a R/T. The Y in your VIN should be a Z. If the dealer sold it as a R/T, and you piad more for it being a R/T, then they bent you over and dry humped you.

The "Z" designates the 5.9L engine...not that it's an R/T. (Ram, Durango, and Jeep have the same "Z" in the VIN.) The "R/T" is an option pack...nothing else.

Allen,

Being a '97 model (probably a sport club-cab) they only have two O2 sensors - One before and one after the cat. They'll have to put the forward O2 sensor in a cross-over ("H" or "X" pipe) and the rear O2 sensor somewhere behind one of the cats (or run an O2-SIMM). Don't go more than 2 or 2.25" inches on the pipes as anything larger on a true-dual will reduce bottom-end TQ. Honestly, i'd stick with a single 3" pipe and a high-flow cat on the truck. It's just as efficient and will keep the noise level down a bit as well (muffler depending of course).

Here's the VIN report:

VIN: 1B7GL23Y7VS257607
Year/Make/Model: 1997 DODGE DAKOTA

Body Style: CLUB CAB PICKUP
Engine: 5.2L V8 SMPI OHV 16V

Bernd, thanks for the help.
I have been checking out VIN decoding sites since the last post and have concluded my truck is in fact not an R/T.
So, the dealer gets my first call today and my attorney gets the second. I am amazed that the dealer would make such a gross miss representation on pupose or by accident.
The truck was advertised in my local paper as an R/T.

Thank to everyone for the heads up.

Bernd,
I just found some more info on the truck,
it is a Sport CC / 5.2 /44RE (DWG) tranny / 3.92 W/ SUREGRIP , 8-1/4" rear end.

I am curios, any idea how many got the Magenta paint for that year.

My truck did come w/ the R/T wheels and new Dunlop 255/55/17 tires. I guess that takes some of the sting out

bernd- as long as the 7th digit is NOT a "3" and the 8th diigit IS a "Z" then no matter what it is an R/T (assuming a Dakota here). The only way to get a Z as the 8th digit in a Dakota is with the quad cab and there are no quad cab R/Ts. R/T was only an option pack on a 70 challenger as well, but that doesn't make putting strips, hood, and F60-15 Goodyears on a 318 car into a R/T.

The Dakota R/T is just a Dakota with the R/T option package... just like the Camaro's SS option package... or The Trans Am WS6 option package.

Unfortunately for our fellow Dakota owner, they didn't start offering the R/T Option package until 98.

Later,
Tom "Slick"

It is still my point that even if you take a Dakota and completely convert it to have all the same options as an R/T, even to go so far as to replace the 318 or 4.7 with a 360 you still don't have an R/T. Selling shuch a "clone" to an unsuspecting buyer would be a case of fraud. No matter what you do to a RC or a CC you can never legally get that "Z" in the VIN.

On engine swaps, if you want to have it done correctly...you need to take your vehicle down to your local BAR Inspection Station where they will check for emissions compliance. Then, they will issue you a new VIN with the proper designations for that model/line. (Yup...the "Z" can actually be put into a VIN...it't not cheap though.)

will it be put in the vin on the dash? and the one on the door sticker? and the emissions one under the hood, and the tag behind the grill, and the one under the rear bumper and... Dodge even used to stamp the vin on the engine and transmission so you really knew if it was an original motor. I don't know if they go that far still but I bet they do fro theft reasons.

Thanks everyone for the your help.

As it turns out my truck is an imposter unfortunatley. I did manage to get a factory build sheet for my truck and a new 02 R/T for comparison an the R/T package is quite extensive.

So now I am in search of a good fraud attorney to take care of the matter.

For those out there considering buying a Dak R/T from anyone, ((((((RUN THE VIN)))))).

Word from the wiser, don't trust dealers they will lie to you as fast as shady individuals.

You really don't need an attorney to handle this matter. I would contact the dealer and request a refund on the truck. If he fails to meet your demands, you can go to your state's attorneys general office. They have a division that handles such cases. Also, your state licenses dealers and they will be most happy to assist you.

I am sorry that this happened to you. When you get your hands on a genuine R/T, you will love it.

Don't let this one bad experience ruin your quest for an R/T. I love the one I have and so will you.
