Subject: Better Brakes... IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone knows of better Brake Calipers for our Daks. I would like to upgrade to 2 or 4 piston calipers, but I don't know of anyone that makes them. Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. I and looking for calipers for a 2002 4.7L SLT Plus Extd Cab.

Message: I'm know expert, but its my understanding you can't simply just upgrade calipers to improve your brakes, upgrading the calipers requires other modifications. The easiest and most cost effective brake upgrade is to upgrade the factory rotors, they are very poor quality. There are many upgrades available, I personally went with Brembos and I am pretty happy. Stops much better then stock but even now I want to upgrade the rear drums to discs.

Message: I've also upgraded the rotors them selves to cross drilled rotors from Power Stop. I'd like to change out the rear drum to disc but I don't know about spending a grand or so on that.

Message: upgrade to '03+ brakes... do a search for it... I did it, and I guess I was one of the first to do it...
YOu gain a 12 inch heavy rotor (instead of an 11inch) and 2 piston calipers with a different spindle assembly and different brake hose assembly...
THe swap wasn't totally easy, but it was pretty much a bolt and unbolt process...
Do a search for it....
GOOD LUCK!!!
I am much happier with the 2 piston fronts, has a much better pedal and it will actually stop if you stomp on it now.... before, it would just slow down a little faster, then warped the rotors with extreme quickness...

Message: also.. forgot to add...
The 2002 and older dakotas used spindles with locating forks cast-machined into them that located the brake calipers, the '03+ spindles use a bolt on brake caliper bracket mount assembly and are much beefier than the '02 and prior spindles...
This means that you really need these spindles if you want to put a bigger caliper on no matter what...
Fabricate a caliper mount bracket and find the caliper that you want to use....
GOOD LUCK!!!

Message: Ryan,
I did a search on your brake upgrade but nothing came up. Id be interested in doing it if it works because my '00 4x4 QC goes through rotors like crazy. I do tow a lot, but my trailer does have brakes and shouldn't be adding to my rotor problem. Is your truck a 4x4? If so, I'd be intersted in the link to your build up or the list of parts you had to get.
Thanks!

Message: Turbofreak When you did the swap did you rep. the master cyl. or? I thought about the swap but I thought there would be to much rear brakeing. Maybe I over thought it.

Message: No, the master cylinder was the same part number for an '03 with rear abs only as the '02 with rear abs only like my truck... Of course, remember that this is rear abs on a drum brake, not a disc system...
As far as the master cylinder and proportioning goes, it used to lock the back brakes and engage the rear abs pretty easily with the old small brakes and stock setup, now, it hasn't engaged the ABS on the rear since, and I figure it is because it doesn't take as harsh of a push on the pedal (master cylinder-brake line pressure increase) to stop the truck...
If I put rear discs on the back, I figure on possibly having to put an adjustable proportioning valve on the line going to the rear, but then again, you don't know till you try it...
;-)
GOOD LUCK!
