Subject: Question... IP: Logged
Message: Hi all! I have a 2003 Quad Cab, and I have had a horrible squeaking on my front left wheel. The squeak goes away once the truck is well warmed up, usually after about five miles of driving. Anyway, I have an appt in two days to have the squeak looked at (I am thinking my sway bar bushings are worn, but could be the shocks, I guess) and to have my wiper recall repaired, but today I left work, backed out of my parking spot with no problems. Ran to the grocery store, and when I went to back out of my spot there I was having a lot of trouble, I could feel something rubbing that was preventing me from having full turn radius as I backed out. Same thing occured when I pulled into my driveway, and I am a bit concerned. I do have to drive to work tomorrow, and am hoping to not cause any further damage, and was wondering if anyone had ideas about what it could be. I do have extended ground clearance and 4WD but everything is just as it came from the factory, no additional accessories installed or anything, never in an accident. Also have only off roaded a couple of times (when it was a little rough getting to the lake to fish!).
Thanks in advance for any assistance, I love my truck but am fairly vehild illiterate.

Message: Make sure you have the truck in 2-wheel drive and not 4-wheel drive. Having the truck in 4-wheel drive will cut down on your turning radius and possibly make the sound that you are hearing.

Message: Forgot to tell you, part time four wheel drive should only be used on loose gravel or ice & snow. NOT on dry pavement.

Message: Thanks...I haven't been using the 4WD lately, so it's been running in two wheel since last winter with the exception of a few bad rainstorms, without 4WD it then tends to slide with the lightweight back. Otherwise I reserve it for winter snow and ice, and the occasional muddy off road trip.

Message: 4wd is fine on pavement...just no hard manuvering. Driving in a straight line with very slight turning is fine, but no hard turning so as to bind the driveline.
As to the problem, I couldn't tell ya. Take it to the dealer and take a tech for a ride.

Message: When you take your truck to your mechanic, make sure you have him check out you ball joints. Dakotas' don't have a very good rep. for their ball joints. GOOD LUCK ! :)

Message: Thanks everyone for your help. My ex- husband (who also drives a Dakota) said it sounds to him like 4WD also, so i went and checked, and apparently at some point today it was bumped into 4WD. So that explains the rubbing, and since I wasn't experiencing that problem for long, I am sure no harm was done. Now if only the mechanic can get rid of the squeak I'll be set. Oh, and let's hope for no more recalls. I can't figure out this windshield wiper problem, I've had three cars in the last 6 years and ALL have had this same recall. One Nissan, one Olds, and now my Dodge...

Message: You do know there is a recall on the wipers? Something to do with water getting into the motor and shorting it out. If you have not got a recall notice, your dealer should be able to help you.
