Subject: Stuff for Kotas costs big $$$! IP: Logged
Message: I was looking up the prices of a lot of dakota performance stuff and wow they really rack up the bill. I looked mostly at KRC performance's site but being 16 its gonna take me a while to make real gains on my truck. i made this list from KRC and FASTMANTB's sites.
M-1, 2 barrel Magnum Intake non EGR $449
It does not include the thermostat housing, fuel rails, throttle body or throttle body gaskets, heater tower, or coolant sensor which has to be moved over from the old manifold.
5.2 V8 1.980 50.29 $250 w/$80 Core
Mopar Performance PCM 96-2000. $359
1997-1999 Dakota/Durango 318/360 FIPK $239
1.7 Rockers $450
$1747
If you can tell me where to get some of these things cheaper id really be grateful otherwise soemone needs to be making some cheaper parts! (and thats not even including headers!!!)

Message: The reason why its all expensive is because of where you are looking. Those sites (fastman, krc, socal dakota, gs motorsports, etc.) Have only QUALITY parts. You are going to spend good money for quality parts. You will find stuff for cheaper but not anything as good. I have bought a few things from some of these websites and its worth it, i wish i just put the hard money down first and got quality parts rather than trying to half a$$ my way around everything. Do it right, it may be expensive and take a alot of time but it will be worth it.
however, universal items that arent just for our dakotas such as nitrous kits, ignition, fuel injectors, exhaust, intake, etc. can usually be found cheaper just on ebay or at any good speed shop.

Hughes does this for $165 and the workmanship is every bit as the guy that says "if you are paying over $250, you are paying to much." I've been doing these for friends and have been in the tool making business for over 30 years and I can tell you, there is not $250 value in that modification.

"1997-1999 Dakota/Durango 318/360 FIPK $239"
Save yourself some money here too. Buy the K&N filter and make the rest yourself. There is nothing magic about the rest of the kit. If you don't want to use the stock airhat, you buy aftermarket ones for $50 or so.
There, now I just saved you over $250. You'll save yourself even more money by making sure the mods you are paying for will give the results you want. I.E. throwing an M1 manifold on will cost you big time on the bottom end. Ask yourself if that is the direction that you want to go.

One of the most eye-opeining installs I have seen was with the KRC cams. They aren't that expensive and are well worth the investment. They create a platform for the rest of the engine to stand on.
If you are handy with a welder, you can also fab up your own true-dual exhaust (if you have existing pre-cats) for a fraction of the cost.
If you have the patience, you can bore out your own TB with a dremel and save off of the Fastman's costs... just don't leave any aluminum shavings in the TB.
Those, with a few of the cheap mods listed on this board (moving IAT, 180* t-stat, etc.) really bring life to the Mopar engines.
All the individual mods combine to be worth more than the sum of each mod (cynergy).

Message: You also have to realize that there isnt much competition for parts for our trucks. There just isn't a lot of people making mods for Dodge VS. Gm or Fords. Look at a parts list for a Mustang and you'll see that price competition drives a lot of this. But our trucks are big too, and often that means more raw materials are used, handled, and fabricated to produce those parts, resulting in a more expensive part. Thankfully there aren't much people out there making junky parts for our trucks, ensuring that most of the time, you are buying a true quality item. Any job worth the time or money to do, is worth doing well, same goes for your parts.

Message: Thanks guys those are all great tips. I hadnt even thought about making my own intake but thats a great idea. Also i will look up the hughes site and take them into consideration for a tb also. For cams is it alright to have a cam without pre existing mods? How much horsepower does that add. My knowledge of cams is limited to the performance cams you put in a roadrunner or cuda, not a truck.

Message: when you buy from socal dakota they're usually the cheapest but don't expect it there quickly. and don't run 1.7 rockers with a non-stock cam, I know a couple guys in my club who did that and broke the valve springs from the travel. go with 1.6 or 1.5 depending on your cam's aggressiviness, and don't forget the pushrods, you might as well change them too once you get them in the open. you can port & polish you beer barrel to and get a little more hp out of her and keep you torque. go with the M1 if you are going to put on a power adder. one thing nice about the 5.9 is that you can get a lot of hp out of them without strapping on the power adders most i have seen is 423 rwhp at 468 rwtq and that was still stock block too.

There's a little discussion on it right here.

Car or truck, it's the same thing unless you are talking big block. Even then, it's pretty much the same. If you can do one, you can do the other.
