Subject: 1989 w/5.2L.....mods? IP: Logged
Message: Hello all, new to the board, I just bought a 1989 Dakota with a 5.2 (Shelby truck), what kind of mods are out there to help this truck under the hood? I don't want anything crazy, looking for ideas and sorces. Thanks!

Message: Not much if you're planning on keeping the stock TBI in place. The tried-and true upgrades apply, butnot without computer mods. Are you in an emmissions-sensitive area? That'll also dictate things. One popular deal that Mopar even offered as an off-road upgrade was the 360 TBI, PCM, and a Flowmaster muffler. A more potent deal would include the 360 heads and matching intake, along with a cam like the old 340 Magnum cam. CompCams offers what is called an OEM-replacement cam for this engine, meaning it will work with the stock electronics, but you will need the 901-16 valve springs they offer. This is important in that the aforementioned 360 TBI stuff can be pricey when you can find it. The CC cam will give better low rpm power, and much better upper rpm power. You could go with a hotter cam, and add a Jet chip. Definitely put in the TransGo kit ASAP if you plan on the tranny living very long. Anything you can do to improve the exhaust will help a ton! Then there's the whole Magnum top-end conversion, including multi-port injection.
Now, if you can go with a carb, bliss can be yours, and a 400hp/6,000 rpm 318 is a no-brainer.

Message: Say I go with a set of headers and a mild cam, is there a chip out there to work with that and keep the TBI? I'm not wanting to do alot of changes, I want to stay somewhat stock because of what the truck is. Do you have a sorce for a chip?

That's pretty much it. They have 2 chips that plug inline to the PCM. Just go into their online catalog and choose the '89 Dodge Full-size truck 5.2 automatic tranny. All the engine maintenance is the same as the full-size D150, and this is no different.
