Message: Bought an 04 4x4 sport about 2 months ago, and love everything but....the crappy mpg. Put a drop in k&n, dynomax turbo muffler to open it up alittle, but still the same crappy mpg. OK, we will try a cover next, but still the same crappy mph. What gives here guys? I can't seem to get any better than 12mpg out of this sucker. Should I go ahead and drain the manuf. lubes and replace with synthetic next or what? From most of the other posts on mpg, I seem to be coming up short. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I love this dam truck, but it eats gas like a fatman eats icecream!

Message: I'll assume since it's an '04 that you bought it new. Give it some time to break in. you should eventually get about 15-16 mpg. My '00 QC 4X4 automatic got 11-12 highway mpg up until it reached about 9K miles. At that point it magically jumped up to 14-15 hw mpg. My truck was completely stock. I installed a free flow intake w/K&N filter and gave it a tuneup at 30K miles, but it held steady at 14-15 hw mpg regardless. I recently(at 75K miles)replaced the muffler with a cheap Pace setter turbo muffler and now JUST WITH THAT, I now get 16-17 hw mpg. Go figure! The long and the short of it is you bought the wrong truck if you're looking for mileage. My friends '04 Sierra ext cab 4X4 5.3L SLE gets 19-21 highway mpg AND is more reliable AND he got it for less than what I paid for my Dakota in '00! I digress!

Message: When I drove my 02, 4.7 4x2 CC SLT home from the dealership, I had to drive it about 300 miles to get it home. I got 23.7 mpg on the highway. Got about 18.5 city/highway mix 70/30 mix miles not time.
drove it till 25k miles, city dropped to 16 mpg, and highway dropped to 18-19 mpg.
took it on a pure highway non-stop trip last week with 55k miles on it. drove for one full tank non-stop and got 21 mpg on highway, and drove it 2500 miles non-stop (except for fuel ups and sleep) and stuck with 21 to 21.5 mpg per tank. First time back city driving, and I'll let you know if there is a change.
Damn computer cars just are way too strange for me, I should just stop caring, if mileage really mattered, I'd buy a honda!

Message: Your milage sounds unusually low for a 4.7; is it a quad cab ? I get 15 mpg with a heavy foot, I have to tow a 4-5000 lbs to bring it down to 11 mpg. Have you had the dealer check it for problems ?

Message: Mayo, I get 16-17 out of my '04 CC 4.7 5spd. 2wd and I run the crap out of it...when you fill the tank how many gallons does it actually take? For a while my fuel light would come on shortly after the 200 mile mark on the trip meter...the fuel level unit was bad....your truck should hold close to 20 gallons so make sure you don't have the same issue I did.

Message: I agree, somethings not right there. Read some of the millions of other posts about fuel mileage, and what other trucks are getting. Dodge mileag is pretty bad, but shouldn't be that bad.
First, check the speedometer/odometer to make sure it's accurate. Then check mileage the old fashioned way to make sure the overhead console is accurate. Then take it back to the dealer for a check up. It's new, let them worry about it.

Message: 12 mpg something is seriously wrong unless you have a solid lead right foot.
My '04 Quad Sport is averaging 17.4 mpg after 2850 miles I've hauled over 500 lbs in one 300 mile highway jaunt got 15.5 mpg on mountain roads. I'd take it into the dealer and have them check it out. By any chance have you checked for codes? Off/On, Off/On, Off/On with the ignition without turning the engine over?

Message: sounds like i have the same problem 04sport had. My light will come on after 200 miles also. I did notice once when filling her after the light came on that I only had to put in 13 gallons to fill it up. Sounds like i have a bad gauge, and yeah its new, we will let dodge handle it. Thanks for all the help guys, later.

Message: Ok, let's assume he can do math... regardless of when the low fuel light comes on... you still have to fill the tank and get the number of gallons to fill. Then you divide the number of miles by the number of gallons... What difference does it make when the low fuel light comes on??
What tips me over on these milage threads is that people don't always specify whether or not they have 4x4 or 4x4 + AWD or what gear ratio they have. It makes a difference.
I have an 04 4.7L 4x4+AWD 5sp auto quad with 3.92's. In town driving gets me between 13.5 and 14 mpg. Pure hwy driving gets me a between 17 & 18 mpg. A mix gets me between 15 & 16 mpg.
I can't imagine that 12 mpg is normal... I think my set up is as bad as it gets for mpg. I don't know your particular driving habits but if your foot is always into it, you're going to get 12 mpg.

Message:
It is a PROVEN FACT that switching to synthetic lubricants vs. conventional crude oil increases your miles per gallon.
I have an onboard indash computer in my Lexus that monitors my Total Miles, My Current MPG, My Average MPG, my average MPH, my MPG since the last fill-up, etc.
I purposefully ran the odometer to 9,000 miles using Castrol GTX from the Quickie-Lube (changing the oil every 3,000 miles) ... before I switched to Amsoil 100% True Synthetic SAE 5w-30 which is the oil recommended for most Dakotas..
I do this with every new vehicle ... to test the oils by performing Used Oil Analysis, to monitor how much quieter it is using Amsoil, to monitor the fact that the engine runs cooler using Amsoil, and to monitor any positive changes in MPG using Amsoil.
I must see positive results with my own eyes to be able to truthfully talk about Amsoil.
The truth ...
After switching from Castrol GTX (at 9,000 miles) to Amsoil ... my average MPG (per tank) driving a combination of city and highway (living in Manhattan, NYC and commuting to my office across the GW Bridge in New Jersey) went from an average of 16.2 MPH over the test run of 9,000 miles using Castrol, to 18.1 MPG for the next 15,000 miles using Amsoil, averaging approximately 26+/- MPH.
18.1 MPG using Amsoil ... vs. 16.2 using Castrol ... a 13% increase
My vehicle currently has 24,000 miles on the odometer, the engine runs cooler, the engine runs quieter, and I am getting better gas mileage.
FYI ... The last long distance all highway miles trip I drove was to Lake George, New York and back, 200 miles each way, and I actually averaged 24 miles to the gallon on that trip ... using Amsoil SAE 5w-30 100% True Synthetic Oil ... and I believe I beat the window sticker ... and that was driving 75 mph +/-.

I have experienced the same (or similar) results in my last 3 "new" vehicles (all three had in-dash on-board computers), except for a "used" Jeep Wrangler that was purchased with 21,000 miles on the odometer, testing between 21k and 30k using dino, and then testing from 30k forward using Amsoil. The Jeep tests were less scientific and factual. The Jeep did not have the computer system.
__________________________________________________
Industry tests have shown improved fuel economy of 2 - 5% in vehicles using synthetic lubricants vs conventional "dino" lubricants.
However, it has been my experience that most people that switch see between 4% - 10% increase in mpg.
My results were excellent ... a 13% Increase!
Your results may be different. It may depend on the vehicle.
