Subject: 4.7 vs 5.2/5.9 reliability
IP: Logged

Message:
I've searched the archives to compare these two engines (5.2&5.9 are close enough to the same for the moment) and get lots of opinions on performance questions. My reliable little 3.9 has 190,000 miles with no trouble at all, but when I replace it I will be getting a dakota with a v-8. Does the 4.7 have the longevity that the other engines seem to have?
Thanks

Based on my personal experience, they are both great. Service life is primarily a owner responsibility issue. The '92 5.2 I once owned was still original at 217K miles. My current '01 4.7 has 93K trouble-free miles. 3K oil/filter changes, 35K plugs, 30% 93 octane in tank, STP injector cleaner 5K.

He's right, maint has a lot to do with it. The 5.2/5.9 has been around forever in a variety of forms. The are absolutly rock solid bullet proof. To kill one, you really have to work at it. I've watched people beat the stuffins' out of them and they still run. Even when they are really worn out and seem ready to die, they still run good.

the 4.7 is a pretty good design, and so far has proven reliable. But only time will tell.

I let you know. I'm keeping mine til' I die. It'll take awhile to find out, I hope. It only has 45000 so far and it's perfect over the first two years.

This all brings up an interesting question. What do you do with your vehicles when they are still running ok and have such high mileage? Do you plan on rebuilding the engine, doing any body work, etc?
Just curious,
Mark

Actually, my '92 RC WAS a keeper. I had plans to rebuild/repaint, even considering the 217K mileage. Unfortunately, the Dak was killed by a stupid woman in a '95 T-Bird, who blasted from a parking lot through a "wave-through" in the right lane while I drove along in the left lane. Take note, people: if you are "nice" and act as the "eyes" for another driver and tell them to "come on", you may be liable for causing an accident. Sometimes being "rude" is best for all concerned. Sorry about the soapbox; I still miss ol' Blue.

'00 dakota with 66K hard miles. Drive it like ya' stole it. Plenty of Horses and torque with no mods. Would put this truck against almost any 1/2 ton.
