Subject: What type antifreeze?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have an 02 4.7L and am wondering for my own curiosity what type of antifreeze is factory fill? Mine doesn't need any, but I was looking at it and it is orange (Like GM's 'dexGEL'...). I didn't see anything in my manual that specified what type of antifreeze so I'm asking you guys...

Thanks,
Jesse

There is an extensive thread on this topic, check "search". What I did a year ago with my '01 4.7 was to drain the orange "high-mileage" coolant, flush about 30 gallons of water through the system, and replaced the 50/50 mix with standard green antifreeze. Tests have proven that engine heat is contained better with the green type. I'm into excellent maintenance for my Dak, so routine flush/fill is not an inconvenience.

The orange and green types will NOT mix, or you will end up with a gel-like substance that will clog your radiator. Thirty gallons are needed to safely flush the orange type out.

your best bet is to go to a dealer. there are 2 different coolants available. yours takes the extended life 100,000 mile coolant. you could also look at a parts store. the bottle must say chrysler approved and it must say it uses HOAT technology. using green coolant, dexcool, or the universal clear coolant will cause corrosion, sludge, and water pump failure. Don't listen to the uninformed that say the green or dexcool or ok. THEY ARE NOT.
