Subject: 4.7 L dakota

Message:
I just test drove a 2000 4.7 L club cab, 2 wheel drive, with about 55,000 miles on it. The engine was a 4.7 magnum (I didn't know there was one). The milage display says the vehicle was getting 13.7 MPG. I was expecting allot better milage, and I'm not a lead foot. Was this an aberation? Could somebody let me know what to expect out of a 4.7 L on a club cab. What effect should "Magnum" have on an engine, V6 or V8?

Thanks

"Magnum" has not had much meaning in terms of extra performance for many years. All the v8s are magnums, including the 4.7. I get 15 mpg from my RC 4x4 with a heavy foot, I'd trust real measurements over an overhead console display.

Dont expect anything great...Like Kowalski said, 15 is pretty average...just wait till you lay into it and start getting 12mpg.

I've been getting 16-17 highway, and 15-16 around town. It fluctuates tho, sometimes I'm only getting in the 14's. Gotta remember tho, it's a V-8.

Speaking of the overhead console thingie, yesterday I drove our 2004 Grand Caravan which I usually DON'T. The wife drives it daily to work, I drive my Dak. We have been using the Dak more on the out of town trips than the Caravan which wasn't the plan when we bought the Caravan. Just goes to show how much I like the Dak :-)

Anyway... we drove the Caravan yesterday. I filled the gas tank and reset the MPG indicator. The wife hasn't reset it for several tanks. It had a running average of about 15MPG. That is about all the 3.8 V6 Grand Caravan gets. I think my truck gets pretty close to the same as long as I keep my HEAVY FOOT out of it.

Rule of thumb here is. If you drive a Caravan, or a sh*t box Sedan, or the likes you are going to baby it a little more. If you drive your Dakota with a throbbing V8 you're going to be gassing that pig. But isn't it worth it?

Why can't you use overdrive ? I get 11 mpg pulling 5000 lb fifth wheel. Only goes into OD in low load cruising.

Ive got taller than stock tires on mine and it shifts in and out of OD all the time when im towing, i figure id rather spend the money on gas and save the tranny from all the extra shifting and hopefully get more miles out of it.

Good idea, then ! Guess I'll stay away from taller tires, I like the way mine never seems to hunt gears.
