Subject: ho cams/run rough?

i just got my truck back from a shop. actually my family drove it home for me (30 miles) because i was on vacation in michigan. anyways, i got a call saying it kept cutting out in intersections and stoplights and it really worried her. i drove it two miles home from their house tonight and it was a rougher idle, it seemed to hunt more and i kept a light foot on the gas to prevent cut out and when i got home it did cut out but only after i tapped the gas twice to play with it. but still, it would have never done that before. what's the deal do i need to live with it or what? the cams came to me slightly rusty as a side note. hope that doesn't matter long term either. so, anyone had a similiar experience?

Mine ran slightly rough at first, but then settled down. Your PCM may just need to relearn. These are the Mopar HO cams right?, not the KRC ones which may need a flash to run better - I believe.
Check the hoses,,the codes, etc.....then take it back if still acting up.

disconnect the neg battery terminal and turn key all the way to start for 30 secs to reset comp. then reconnect battery and start it up without touching the throttle and let it idle for at least a minute.

Right after I installed the HO cams in my '01 4.7, the performance was nearly the same as the original cams. About 2-3 weeks later, it seemed to come to life. It really seems that the PCM has to adjust to the cams. Give it some time. You may also have a dirty throttle body or bad gas issue that may have ironically showed up at the same time. Jason, you mentioned driving the truck after being on vacation. The 5.2's had a quirk that when they sat idle for extended periods, on start up they would buck and smoke like a SOB. I've found that my HO cammed 4.7 seems to run better with 4-5 gallons of premium mixed in a full fuel tank.

zendak, you were right. everything is fine now. rough idle is gone. was almost gone the next day actually. new thread time? i love the torque the dakota has now. from 2000-4000 rpm i am happy with it. however, i still have the problem of wide open passing someone, those high rpms are losing power before it shifts into third, i actually might as well pass in third gear at half throttle so it's in the power band, chevy silverados (please hold your comments guys) have a great second gear passing ability and i want that on my truck. but... how much low end am i really giving up with the manifold. has anyone done just a manifold and can tell me when the low rpm power loss stops. i mean at what rpm are you back to normal and then what rpm are you reallly seeing the benefit again. this may be a picky question but i have a ho manifold sitting in my closet and i am undecided about giving up the around town torque i am coming to love. input please.

Slap on the HO manfild, the one for the 03/04. The others (01/02) are different. Get rid of the jet chip and have your computer reflashed by krcperformance or kenne belle. You will keep your lowend. Your truck will pull strong till 5500 rpm's. This will make a very noticable difference.
