Subject: Odometer Miles, where is it stored? IP: Logged
Message: Is the miles kept in the PCM? What if some one was to swap out a pcm of the same make and model of another truck with diff miles on it, would the new pcm show the other trucks miles?
Just wondering?
Also, when you get your pcm professional flashed or you get a mopar PCM, how do they know or verify to put in the correct miles that where on the vehicle?
I recently purchased a Dakota with a mopar pcm in it and just was wondering if the miles could have been messed with. How could I tell?

Message: I've heard milage is stored in more than one place, but you'd have to use a reader to go looking for it. When swapping between a boneyard PCM and my stock one while being flashed, correct milage continued to be displayed and accumulate on the odometer; so the main storage site for this info must be other than the PCM. I assume if someone used a reader on my stock PCM miles on it would now be low due to time on boneyard PCM. Main site might be TCM ? In that case it might change since I think the newest trucks now have TCM included with PCM ?

Message: I'm not sure about the Dakota's, but I know in other Daimler/Chrysler vehicles it's stored in the body control module. The body control module is the device under the dash that controls the dome light, remote door locks, alarm and a ton of other functions.

Message: Most vehicles also have another computer module that records the driving behavior of the vehicle. Kind of like a black box on an airplane. It can be used after a crash to tell speed, braking, direction and other factors. I think that the mileage is stored here also, and you can't mess with it, so I wouldn't worry about it. If your odometer still works and the miles you see didn't change, then forget about it.
