I'm interested in buying a dakota and i ran a carfax and this is what it came up with
2002 DODGE DAKOTA SPORT/RT
what does the r/t stand for?

the truck has 21k and they want $9400
excellent condition
how does that price sound?

I also looked at a 2001 Dakota sport 4x4 4.7 club cab with 90K miles and they want $8900

any advise on picking between these 2?

What is the VIN number?

If there is a "Z" in it, then the turck will have the 5.9L motor

R/T stands for "road/track"
it has better suspension and the 5.9L motor

I guess it depends on what you want do do with your truck... you will get better mileage with the 4.7L and its 4 wheel drive!
I'm just guessing, but I would think that an R/T wouldn't be good snow transportation :-) it depends on if you live in a snow prone area..
Also, the 5.9L won't set any fuel mileage records either LOL. (especially with my right foot :)
but if you want to get up and GO, then get the R/T!! the R/T is also lower from the factory (1" front/2"rear I think)

Just my .02

it doesnt have a z in the vin number i dont know why carfax shows the r/t then
and it has a 3.9L

but with 21k miles and the remainder of the factory warrenty it sounds like a good deal for 9400$

yep its a v-sixer, not an R/T, oh well. A nice little truck though. If you dont care about performance and want better gas mileage, it sounds like a good deal to me.

Yea its just to get me back and forth to work 20 miles round trip and the occasional moving stuff.
When i want performance i ride my suzuki gsx1300r
it actually has more horsepower to the rear wheel than the dakota
Thanks for your help

Just my opinion......Get the V8. Get the V8. Maybe shop around for one with fewer miles, but plenty of guys drive these trucks for a long time and put a lot of miles on them with very few problems. I have a 99 daksport 4x4 with a 5.2L, 63,000 miles, and I love it. I do have to replace my intake plenum gasket this weekend, but I just look at that as bonding between man and truck. No matter what though, make yourself happy.

The v6 is a solid engine, if a little underpowered. It will last a long time though, just like the v8. I have a 1992 v8, over 187k miles on it, still pulls strong and chirps the tires on the 1-2 upshift. Gas mileage is atrocious though, but the v6 is not exactly economical either. I think 2002 was the year they finally fixed the recurring ball joint problems on the GenIII trucks, but I am not positive on that.
