Gasket or RTV? Which do you prefer? A fel-pro gasket seems to be the way to go. What are the pros & cons?

What about with synthetic oils? Anyone have any leakage problems with RTV or similar product? What about with gaskets?

I have a high capacity stainless steel cover. I use Black RTV. Have never had any leaks. I bought the gasket, but never used it.

Just changed out the rear lube to Amsoil 75W-90 in my '03, 3:55 LSD. I used the red silicone from dodge and it worked just fine. Just let it set up for a while after you install the cover.

Do you apply the RTV on the cover or the rear diff? How long do you let the bead sit before mating the surfaces back together?

Just put a large bead on the cover, give it a few minutes to take a quick set (about 5-10) and then install back on diff. I let mine set up about 5 hrs. after installation before I refilled the diff. Be sure to clean all the old stuff off (Scotchbrite pads work great) before you put the new sealer on.

I used "Right Stuff" last year. It's still sealed up tight. It's more expensive, but with it there is no need for setup time, or waiting to refill. Roll a bead, bolt it on and fill 'er up.

Also used Amsoil synth gear lube. I have the LSD, and the Amsoil for my setup did not require the additive.
