Subject: Rear end Noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2004 Quad Cab 4.7L V8, 9.25/ 3.55 rear end, limited slip. Truck makes whine and hum at 50-53 MPH. Had to two differnt dealers, both replaced ring and pinion set. Still noise persists. Dealers claim it is more noticable becuase I have bedrug liner and tonnaeu cover, which they say tends to amplify the hum, although it is not a mechanical defect but rather a harmonic noise. I bitched and got the district manager involved and he did nothing! Accept say its normal and not a problem. Any way to eliminate it by using diffent gear lube or other remedy? My first Dodge purchase and probably my last :(

Message: My '00 QC "ANTI-SPIN" rear started making noise at around 45K miles. I was told that the rears in the Dodges were junk(by the dealer)and I would need to replace it. AT 45K MILES!!! I did a little research and found that it wasn't so much the rear end that was junk, but rather the fluid that Dodge uses. I drained all of the original fluid and replaced it with Castrol "dino" and an LSD additive. Since then (now a 75K miles)no noise. You may want to give that a try next.

Message: My 99 LSD did this and the problem was not the ring/pinion but the clutches and the spider gears. The housing that holds the clutches broke, allowing the side gears to spread out ever so slightly. This caused the ends of the gears to chip away slowly. When I got in there (after changing my already synthetic fluid with more synthetic fluid, to no avail) I noticed the chewed up ends of the gears and found a small piece of metal sitting in the bottom of the pumpkin. I got new clutch packs, new side and spider gears and new seals, but the ring/pinion did not need to be replaced. No more noise after the repair.
I'd take the truck to a trusted rear end shop and have them look at it. The shop I took it to said it should be expected from this Dodge rear end. I guess i'll be back there in another 80K.
