Subject: Priming fresh rebuild IP: Logged
Message: I am rebuilding 318's and have gotten to the point of oil priming the motor before install. But I can't get the drill to turn the pump. Does the cam have to be out to prime the motor?

Message: You need to use a 1/2" drill motor, not cordless. It will turn slowly, but should still produce pressure. If it won't turn at all, there's a serious problem. You need to drop the pan and inspect the oil pump.
What kind of oil is in there? I hope it's not 20W50.

Message: is it a newer 318? or a pre magnum? im not sure on the magnums, but on the old 318, stick a screwdriver in the oil pump gear and spin it backwards to pry up the gear if the cam is installed. then stick a oil primer in the hole and go to town! i think the magnums would be the same too...
