All right, there are probably a thousand posts here about this. I was rotating the tires on my 03 4.7 SLT and was looking at the ball joint on the passenger side. Noticed the boot around the upper ball joint is completly thrashed. I mean it looks like someone slashed it with a knife a couple of times, and the truck only has 20000. Also, when I brake hard there is a thunk on the same side. Is this the thunk everyone keeps talking about when the joint goes. I've already had it in to dodge a couple of months ago for a squeak on the same side (they told me nothing was wrong.) I just made an appointment for next week and wanted to have some info in case they tell me the same thing.

To check to see if you Ball Joints are bad. Jack the front side up. Have someone hold the tire at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position and try to pry in and out. In the mean time you look at the ball joints. If, there is movement, then yes your ball joints are bad. If, you can do this without someone looking and you can feel the movement. Then, your ball joints are pretty bad.

If you want to check your tie rod end. Then you would hold the tire at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock position. Then try to move the tire back and forth, while doing this have someone look at you tie rod end to see if there is any movement.

I'd probably just tell the dealer that whenever you go over a bump, the front end rattles and you loose control. If that doesn't get them looking in the right place, I might take it to another dealer.
Most dealers seem to have have no questions about performing warranty work. Surely the ball joint situation requires replacement as well as some other parts also. Good luck!
