Subject: Shift Kit by Superior IP: Logged
Message: I am getting a homemade shift kit done for me made by superior and tweaked by a Professor at TSTC in Texas... he is going to charge me $100 for the whole thing. He is claiming and i have seen the results on a 318 dakota that the trans-go and mopar shift kits will not be as good as what he will put together. If all in all is true would a shift kit for my truck be worth the buy and how much improvement will it give me?

Message: Homemade? How can it be homemade if it's made by Superior? The Superior kits were designed to address the problems with these trannies, just as the Fairbanks and TransGo kits do. The Superior kits offer the fixes without the performance angle. So basically, a Superior kit with higher line pressure will deliver better tranny life and a kick in the pants. In fact, Superior and Fairbanks are partners in this kit.

$100 for the kit and installation is a good price.

Message: Yah Gen1Dak....it is made by Superior but, when I say home made he uses some of the parts of that kit and make the rest....dont know what he make but it works. All in all its a great deal and John(the Transmission Professor) Told me with this kit It would be better than just slapping on a kit from trans-go or mopar erformance and I would notice a huge difference in shifts. Really all I think he is doing is tweaking and adding a few things to make the pressure come up faster than the kit was designed for and thus making an even faster shift?? But yeah $100....cant beat that all i have to do is pul the valve body off and the linkage and a couple of others that he mentioned and I can have it back the next day to reinstall it.
Quick Question: If I drive under WOT, the shfit kit is going to make it shift quick and hard...but if I drive normally will it still shift hard or what?

Message: Don't get me wrong here. There's lots of guys out there that know just what to do on these things, so John's offer is probably right up there. Yeah, basically, with the less costly kit, he can fiddle with the line pressure, etc and do what the other kits do, but save some $$$. You'll get the good stuff and the action. Now, tweaking a tranny is funny. Just cranking up the line pressure will cause harsh shifts, so the idea is to turn it up "some"(over stock baseline) but let the kickdown cable do the rest. That way, with light throttle, you have a mild increase in line pressure and a mild shift will result. When you stomp it, the kickdown will cause the line pressure to increase (this is a linear progression. Base pressure setting--stock, or whatever has been dialed in with the kit plus whatever the kickdown dictates on top of this--which is directly dictated by how far you push the accel and how you have the kickdown adjusted), and you get a full-on shift with considerably higher force, so yeah, if done properly you'll get the best of both worlds. (Note that it's more than just line pressure that controls the shift quality, but it is a primary factor. I'm saying this so I don't get a dozen geniuses chiming in stating every other detail in the shift process, as if I didn't know. I'm focusing on one major area.)

Message: I dont know hardley anything at all about transmissions....sounds like gen1dak you know alot more than me. I understand what your saying...but he has been doing this for 35 years and he will show me how to tweak the shift kit and adjust on what kind of levelk or setting I need it. He said it will also depend on what your doing to the application....headers....S/C...and what not. But since you know more than me....could you help me out with the quick question I posted gen1dak??

Message: Nah....the original question I asked after I posted this was....If I get trhat Shift Kit done will my truck shift hard just driving normal or will it shift hard depending on how much gas I give it???

Message: if it's done right the firmness of the shifts will be proportional to gas pedal input.
ie- the harder you mash the go pedal the harder the shift.
