Looking for a new set myself. Anyone tried those rotors that they deep freeze www.300below.com?
I've read that people with powerslots and crossed drilled still get warpage.

Message: I put Raybestos BruteStop drilled and slotted rotors on 6 months ago. Drove 10-15K and towed my heavy azz boat 8-10 times throught the mountains and the rotors are still nice and straight. Oh, the boat trailer does not have trailer barkes so the truck is doing all the stopping. When I put the rotors on I also rebuilt the calipers and rear brakes.
I would highly recommend the Raybostos BruteStop rotors and SuperStop pads I bought from rockauto.com, but if you have other problems with the barking system (hanging caliper, poorly adjusted rear brakes) you might still experience problems with the rotors warping.

Message: something that people forget that helps prevent warped rotors, torque the lugs to manufacture specs (with an actual torque wrench). Specs should be in the owners manual.

Message: warped means they are getting too hot, try slowing down at a controled rate, and not at the last second. two tons of truck is hard to stop.
Could modify the system, go to Viper brakes for 2K. thats the step I'm planning for my R/T....pretty hefty price though....

Message: matt,
I would rather go with wilwood brake kits than another dodge product. wilwood are race proven brake systems. That means, you'll probably never warp those discs. You think the viper racing team uses stock brakes? For 2k, i would put my money on wilwood.
This topic is to find a reasonable price set of rotors that does not warp. The best that i have seen so far is from www.300below.com. I just would like some feedback of people that have used them.
I also found some good success stories of F250 trucks using the cryo treated rotors. Do a search on yahoo for "cryogenic brake rotor" or go here to see an actual test. http://www.cryogenicsofindiana.com/brakes/BrakeRotorTests.htm

Message: Hey fastyz400,
I know we use cryogenically treated cutting tools where I work with much better results than heat treated. Leads me to believe that these frozen rotors may be the way to go. I looked at 300below.com: 1, will the durango rotors work on the dakota? 2, Is that $120 a rotor or pair? I think i'm getting close to new rotors, I may consider this option. Although I think I may shop around.

Message: The whole reason that i started this topic is because, in the "Recall" section of this forum, i found the topic on brake Warpage. However, even people buying "Power Slots" and "Performance Crossed Drilled" rotors. People were still having problems.
Being from the Metal Industry, I have a semi good understanding of Heat treating and the effects of that on material.
During the manufacturing process, cost is a major factor for OEM's. Where "Time" is a major cost factor. So, quality or correctly heat treating rotors may suffer. There is a fine line between quality and cost.
Here's a look at how metals are heat treated. First, the parts are cleaned, then it goes into a furnace, This is vital, the parts must be completely brought up to the correct temperature. I should say the whole part. Thus, taking hours to get up there. If, the manufacture is running behind, they may reduce the time of this process. Thus, full transfermation of the structure is not complete.
Second, This is the quench process where the rotors are dumped into, usually with oil or water, This is where the rotors get super hard. Turning all the structure to a martisidic structure. However, if the first process was not completed properly, this will induce soft and hard spots around the rotor. Thus eventually causing warpage due to heating up of the rotor during hard breaking. The soft areas will deform faster.
Third phase, is the tempering. This is where the parts are brought back to temperature and heat is slowly reduced to bring back that super hard rotor to a more ductile material. What this means is it basically softens the material where it will not crack under stress. However, again. If, there still is hard and soft spots, This process will greatly aggrevate the warpage of the rotos. Meaning less life and easy to warpe.
That's why when i saw the cryo treatment and the time that they take to bring it to temperature and tempering. I said wow. You will get a good rotor that has been properly treated. You have good ductility and the structure of the material would be a good martinsidic structure.
Sorry for the poor spelling.

Message: smoke, I didnt "completely" rebuilt the calipers as I didn't change the pin bushings/seals since they looked in good shape and were sliding freely.
I picked up caliper piston seals and dust boots from Dodge ($20-30), removed the pistons with compressed air, lightly sanded the pistons and bores with #400, #600 and #1000 sandpaper to remove any corrosion or rough spots then put the pistons back in with new seals and dust boots.
If you haven't done this before read a shop manual, you could easily take off a finger if you use too much air pressure on the piston and get your hand in the way :(

Message: The rotor warp problem is due to the rear drums not self adjusting. Unless you constantly adjust your rear drums every 1500 miles you will keep on warping the front rotors. I have a 1998 extended cab V8 dakota with the same problem. Last year I installed a rear disc kit from stainless steel Brakes corp and have not had to replace my front rotors since. If you want to check out their system the website is www.ssbrakes.com. Its definatally worth the money.

what type of pads did you get to go with the rotors? How many miles you got on your rotors now?
I haven't got them yet, and was waiting for some feedback.
