Message: Hello everyone, this is my first visit to these forums and I hate to make my first post full of questions, but I am having some troubles and would appreciate any and all suggestions you might have. I did some searching here on the problems I'm having and everytime I think I'm on to something I find something else that points me in another direction and now I'm plain confused.
I just bought a '99 Dakota Sport, 5.2L auto, and have been trying to figure out just exactly what is wrong with it since I got it. I did pay an extremely low price for it so I am not too worried about spending some coin, but I would like to spend it with results.
I don't even know where to start.
Check engine light is on constant. Truck starts quick, but idles rough...usually revs up and down for a min or two before leveling off at a decent idle speed. Seems to take alot to get it moving, and feels like some light shuddering. At highway speeds the rpms will steadily move up and down about 100 rpm, sometimes feels like a miss but computer shows no misfires, but yet ALL eight injectors are throwing codes. I have had the codes erased six times now, and I get the injector codes everytime. Also, at hwy speed, when I let off the gas or barely touch the pedal the rpms will RISE about 100 rpm.
Sometimes, with or w/o cruise set, it will shift back and forth into OD at highway speeds. Mainly, it is running rough and doesn't seem to shift right. Sometimes it feels like the tranny can't decide which gear to be in.
I have changed the rear cat. oxygen sensor...seemed to run quite well but still slow to get going and symptoms returned within 30 miles. Checked TPS and MAP sensors with a multimeter and seem to have the right voltages on both (according to a Haynes man.). Can not find any vaccuum leaks, and changed spark plugs, air filter, and PCV valve with no improvement.
I've had the truck to three mechanics, one told me I had electrical interferance in my injectors, another said that the computer is bad...but not sure if I buy that. The other had no idea.
So here I am, hoping that someone out there might have some suggestions or comments that might lead me in the right direction. I am by no means an expert on vehicles, so any help is appreciated.
If I can provide any info that might help, let me know.
Like I said, I hate to come here with problems, but hopefully I can learn a few things here on the boards and help others in the future.
Thanks,
Bob

Message: Have you checked to see if your belly pan/plenum gasket is leaking? Couple ways to check are look down the throttle body with a flash light to see if there is alot of oil on the throttle blades. Another is to pull the hose from the PCV valve at the air cleaner to see if there is big vacume pressent. When the Plenum gasket goes bad the engine draws more vacume through the engine then normal. Some have said they didn't get this so don't go just by this test alone. There is another thing you can check and that is the throttle body. If has not been cleaned that also could be a source of your problem. The IAC is touchy so if you decide it take off DON'T move the plunger, you could damage it beyond repair. I'll watch this thread to see if you need any more help.

Message: If the computer is telling you that it's your fuel system, start to consentrate on that.
Check this site out on how to check your fuel system out.

Message: Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I haven't been able to update until now, but the TPS seems to have done the trick. What makes me upset is the fact that I had purchased a new TPS when I bought the truck thinking that was the prob...but then returned it after everybody I mentioned it too said that wasn't it-even the local dealer.
I appreciate all the suggestions and your time.
Thank you,
Bob
