Subject: M1 any good?

Message:
Is the M1 intake manifold worth buying for an otherwise stock dakota? will it give performance that noticeable and is it an easy install or should i get it done by someone else?

If you plan on adding other mods, yes, but nothing else in the stock setup can take advantage of the M1's increased breathing. It'll cost you some bottom-end power as well. DIY? Depends on your perspective.

I haven't yet charted my time slips but the track times were the same after the install

I have stock exhaust, stock intake, but a fastman throttle body.

so...on a stock motor, there is no gain that i could find

I was thinkin a fastman tb, a m1 intake, headers, and an fipk2 system might net me 40hp then maybe a pcm to top it off for like 55hp?

I'm not really sure that you will get 55HP out of just that...then again....

Get an exhaust that can actually handle the increased air flow.

The point is that a better TB and intake are useless if the engine cannot take advantage of the improved flow. You fix this by allowing the cylinders a better chance of filling. You do this by, at minimum, increasing the rocker ratios to 1.7, or, even better, swapping out for a better cam altogether. Then, you will see power gains.

FWIW, I put an M1 on mine only so I would not have to deal with the belly gasket problem anymore. It was actually my first mod to the engine in 12 years of ownership. Since then I have ported/polished the TB, put a K&N filter on it, Mopar PCM, relocated the IAT sensor, removed the block plate on the intake tube, and Autolite plugs. It now runs stronger and better than ever. It has never been to the track, so I have no times to compare. I can say that it will now chirp the tiree on the 1-2 upshift under WOT, which it has never done. It also pulls real strong at 40mp and higher. Overall I like the results. Plus the M1 just looks better on the engine than the keg.

And that backs up what I said. The 5.2's have more cam than 5.9 models, and you'll see more response on them since the .432 lift (as opposed to .410 on the 5.9) will give the engine a little better ability to use the improved flow of the M1 and other airflow mods.

what to do? my 5.2 belly-pan gasket is gone, seems it 's gotten worse lately, pings and knocks alot under acceleration. towing the boat sounds like it's going to throw push-rods out the covers. any ways it has 155k and needs work, how much for a M1 installed compared to a mopar garage fixing it? thanks..

M1 will run you about 450 shipped with the intallation kit and gaskets.

Not sure how much a garage would charge to fix the blown gasket, since I replaced my intake myself.

If money is a concern, check out Hughesengines.com or APSprecision. Both sell a billet aluminum belly pan kit that will help to eliminate future gasket problems by replacing the steel plate with an aluminum one. Price is around $100.

Mopar has had the monopoly for years with the M1. Late last year, Edelbrock announced 2 Magnum-style intakes for carburetor use, but has yet to come to market with them, and this doesn't help if you're gonna use the fuel injection.
