Subject: Pulley knock after belt replacement
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 CC 5.2l that I just replaced the serpentine belt on (60,000mi) and now it seems like the idler/tensioner pulley is making a knocking sound. I verified this by using a long screwdriver as a stethiscope and placing it on the body of the tensioner. I am leaving Friday on a trip to Florida (from Texas) and am hoping it is nothing to worry about. Maybe the tensioner reacting to being moved in order to replace the belt?? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
OJ

this is really a shot in the dark, but make sure the belt is on all of the way, it probably is because of the ribs, but check, make sure it's tight. (the belt).

Hey Clevite77 how ya doin? Thanks for the reply. I have checked what you said and it's tight and on all the way. I looked at it again this evening and it does it every time the white letters on the belt (timing marks??) pass by the idler pulley. I'm beginning to think that it's just because it's a new belt and not broken in yet. I'm also a little paranoid since my trip is coming up on Friday. Thanks to the jerks at the dealership, they have caused me to doubt the reliability of my truck a bit. (long story) Anyway, thanks again for your input. If I have any misfortune on my trip, I'll be sure to let you know :) knock on wood....
