Message: why does my engine idle so nice while in park but not so smoothly while in drive? The tach stays constant, but I can feel the uneven idle. Sometime at a stop light, the rpm will drop suddenly and then return to normal. What's up with this? Thanks.

Message: My wife has a 2000 Reg cab with the 4.7 and it had the same problem, so we took it in and they reprogramed the PCM. They said that there was a recall but we never received anything. I don't know if the 2001 has the same problem or not, but I hope this helps,

Message: Sometimes when I start my truck for the first time in the mornung it starts and then idles down until it almost dies. After that it runs fine and there is absolutly no idle problem. Could this problem be included in the recall. BTW it has only happened about once or twice a month.

Message: (JT) It is NOT a recall but worse.(IMHO)
It is a TSB... DC is not leagally bound to notify anyone about a TSB... even worse, they will not typically "offer up" any information unless somone complains.
Have you checked out the TSBs for your Dakota online... there are 100s of them!

Message: Here is the official TSB that Dodge would use to fix your problem. I have had this done to my truck and it has improved but ocassionaly she'll dip idle going from park to drive. Mostly because they run this engine on the very lean side of things during idle. Altitude will have a great say in whether or not you need this done also.

Engine - Rough Idle/Hesitation/Spark Knock
NUMBER: 18-003-02
GROUP: Vehicle Performance
DATE: January 21, 2002
THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. THE MDS2 MUST BE OPERATING WITH CIS CD21O1 OR HIGHER, AVAILABLE FEBRUARY 18, 2002.
SUBJECT:
Vehicle Performance Enhancements
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the JTEC Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software (01Cal14D).
MODELS:
2001 AN Dakota
NOTE :THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 2001 (AN) DAKOTA TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A 4.7L (EVA) ENGINE AND CALIBRATION LEVEL PRIOR TO (LESS OR LOWER THAN) THOSE LISTED IN THE OVERVIEW ABOVE.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following engine performance conditions.
1. Rough idle after a cold engine start up.
2. Sag or hesitation after a cold engine start up.
3. Warm idle instability.
4. Spark Knock.
PARTS REQUIRED:
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Log onto the MDS2 (Mopar Diagnostic System).
2. Connect the MDS2 and DRB III(R) to the vehicle and switch the ignition key to "ON".
NOTE :AUTO CONNECTION WELL OCCUR ONCE THE DRB III(R) MDS2, AND VEHICLE ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION. THE "CANNOT READ VIN FROM DRB III(R)" MESSAGE (ON THE MDS2) WILL BE REPLACED BY THE VEHICLE VIN. PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON ON THE MDS2 TO REQUEST A MDS2 SESSION FOR THE VEHICLE VIN INDICATED. PRESS THE "OK"BUTTON WHEN ASKED TO BEGIN SESSION.
3. Push the FLASH tab on the MDS2.
4. Select READ PART NUMBERS FROM VEHICLE and click SHOW UPDATES on the MDS2.
NOTE :A MESSAGE MAY APPEAR (AFTER STEP 3 OR 4) THAT INDICATES NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE. IF THIS OCCURS, MAKE SURE YOUR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT IS OPERATING AT THE LATEST SOFTWARE LEVEL AS LISTED EARLIER IN THIS BULLETIN. IF THE LATEST SOFTWARE IS INSTALLED, AND NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE ANOTHER VEHICLE CONDITION EXISTS THAT WILL REQUIRE FURTHER INVESTIGATION.
5. Select the new software part number with the light pen and click UPDATE CONTROLLER SOFTWARE.
6. The MDS2 and DRB Ill® will prompt for any operator action needed during the remainder of the reprogramming process.
NOTE :DUE TO THE PCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE, A DTC MAY BE SET IN OTHER MODULES (EATX, BCM, MIC, SKIM, ETC.) WITHIN THE VEHICLE, IF SO EQUIPPED. SOME DTC'S MAY CAUSE THE MEL TO ILLUMINATE. ALL DTC'S RELATE TO A LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE MODULE THAT IS BEING REPROGRAMMED. CHECK ALL MODULES, RECORD THE FAULTS, AND ERASE THESE FAULTS PRIOR TO RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER. ERASE ANY FAULTS IN THE PCM ONLY AFTER ALL OTHER MODULES HAVE HAD THEIR FAULTS ERASED.
NOTE :THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW.
7. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Software Update Label" p/n 04669020 (Fig. 1). Attach the label to the PCM and cover the label with the clear plastic overlay.
8. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n 04275086 and attach the label near the VECI label (Fig. 2).

Message: Hello, 'spark knock'?
THIS IS THE 'DEATH FLASH'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Do this, it'll run smoother at idle, and knock less, cause it retards the timing! = Loss of Power!

Message: Todd/Bruce P. So are the dealers responsible for these problems? Or do you just suggest that the problem you have might be related? I checked the nhtsa site and found a few familiar problems. The dealer said they didn't see or feel any problems when it was in for service a while ago. What can I do? What can the dealer do, if reputable?

Message: I just got my 2000 4.7 4X4 5-speed 3 weeks ago. It has 18,000 miles. The truck idles from 400 to 1400 RPM's while coasting to a stop in neutral, sometimes when I come to a stop it stalls. I made an appointment w/ the dealer for tomarrow, are they gonna put the "death flash" on my truck? Also, I want to have a performance flash done to my computer within the next 6-9 months, who does this and where are they located?

Message: I just got my truck back today for the same problem. The tech advised me all of updates had been done to my truck. He changed the TPS and the idle motor, but it did not change a thing. My truck still has a rough and low idle (around 500 RPM. So it is back into the shop on Monday!! I hope that they can figure this thing out.

Message: I have the same idle problem, the flash made my gas mileage go down and my idle stayed the same. The mechanic said that "all 4.7 Magnums do this". When I have a real low idle, I can goose the pedal and the idle usually comes back up and stays up. Otherwise, turn the air conditioner on. That adds 200 rpm to the software and allows the engine to run okay. Of course, that kills gas mileage even more. All a matter of trade-offs until Dodge programmers can figure out how to set a low idle of 650 and keep it there. I would not think that would be that difficult...

Message: My 2001 Dakota 4.7 Q-cab has the same but different idle problems. I found that when he AIR conditioning is on there is no change in he idle. If the Air is off and the vent is in the upper two defrost positions, no change in the idle and is at 700-750 RPM. But, if the vent is at any other position, the idle is erratic and wavers between 450 and 750 and is ruff. It acts as if the mixture is very lean. Sense the vents ate operated by vacuum, I bet there is a leak in the vent controls! Is there any one that has a vacuum diagram for the vent controls? This condition became apparent after the factory cleaned the vent system due to musty smells. I have taken the truck back to the dealer twice with no change, 'can't detect the problem'.

Message: As far as the idle thing goes on the 4.7L .... turn the set screw on the throttle body that adjusts the minimum airflow. Did this on mine after having the thing to the dealership about a half dozen times. Worked great. Truck idles at a nice steady 700 rpm all the time now (whether the AC's on or not), and about 800 rpm when in park or neutral. Be careful .. if you adjust it up too far, you will get a P 1294 code (computer can't find idle setpoint -- or something like that). You'll just have to adjust it back down and have the dealership clear the codes. Hope this helps.

Message: Interesting .... I thought that was the case too. Disconnected the battery ... held ignition to 'start' for fifteen seconds ... left battery disconnected for about 15 minutes while I did some other stuff. Code was still there ... maybe it was throwing the code again ... oh well .. in any event, the dealership adjusted the base idle, then cleared the codes on Monday and it hasn't come back yet .. and the truck is idling perfectly at 700 rpm. :o)

Message: hi im a jeep/chry/amc/renault tech and i think your prob is weak valve springs we have a rash of that in all new engines im told by tech training school and we have to pull cylinder head especially on driver side also check the valve guilds they are eggshaped factory supplyer cut guilds wrong so i would check those first maybe perform cylinder leak test to find out u will see the valves arent seating.
