Message: Idle problem - if its always been rough, do as Jes suggested. If it started after originally being OK, clean the IAT on the TB. For the hesitation problem, do a search here to learn how to modify the TPS on the TB. Robert Braker - why would it be more important to check the head on the driver's side ?

Message: Check that ... after having the 'idle screw' adjusted, my truck has thrown a P 1294 code twice. Evidently, the computer doesn't like the higher idle setting. Also, my combined (60% hiway, 40% city) mileage has gone from near twenty to about 14. Truck goes back in tomorrow. I'll keep y'all updated.

Message: I recall a CW-post from awhile back where his advice was not to mess with this idle screw. He didn't go into details, but as I recall he said something like "...it messes with other things..."
My interpretation was that opening the TB butterfly, as opposed to letting the IAC adjust accordingly could muck up the PCM's control.
This may be what you hit...

Message: I recall that post too, I wish we could get a better explanation of why he claimed that. Not saying he's wrong, but all it does is let a little extra air in, seems like sensor should pick up on the extra air and adjust the fuel ? I had to do this to mine a while ago to make a 68mm TB from a standard tranny truck work on my 2000 auto; it wouldn't hold an idle with the extra drag from the slushbox. No codes/no problems. Please keep us updated. Anyone else with any info on this ?

Message: Dealer replaced complete throttle body -- IAT, TPS, butterfly throttle plate ... idles at a smooth even 600 rpm all the time now. Better late than never.

Message: i have a 92 dodge dakota and it was running fine for a long time. then one day i could tell there was a little tension in the gas peddal. i could tell that it would kind of stick for a couple seconds sometimes and sometimes it wouldnt. then a couple days ago my truck would die everytime i stoped or even slowed down. and i fixed everything i could think of. but now i realize that the gas peddal ( the line that connects the gas peddal to the carbuerator is really loose. and i think that is my problem. i was told there is a screw i can tighten up to fix the problem but i cant find the screw. if anyone could help by telling me where the screw is or even a different way to fix this problem it would be a big help thank you very much. justin

Message: I know this is a REALLY old thread, but I'm having the same problem too. My dealer found TSB 18-003-02 too, but I'm also concerned about it being a "DEATH FLASH". Has anyone that has had this flash noticed a performance or gas mileage decrease?

Message: Do you know the suffix for that flash ? (They go from AA, to AB, AC, etc...) Supposedly, anything up to AH did not retard your timing (death flash).

Message: Dont let the dealer flash your PCM with the "DEATH FLASH". My 2000 4.7 had it done and I lost low end performance. It was really noticeable. The flash retards the timing.
My solution around this was to buy a Superchips Supertuner. It removed the "DEATH FLASH" and gave back more performance.
My suggestion if you cant afford a tuner is to clean you throttle body. Remove the IAC solenoid and clean it completely. Also check where the IAC seats in its bore. Mine was not making complete contact. I replaced it with a spare one and my idle improved(even with the Superchips).
Do not mess with the throttle position screw. It is set at the factory to allow minium air to pass when fully closed. Its the job of the IAC to control the idle air flow via the PCM. Its not an idle screw like a carburetor.

Message: The only info I can find on the version of the TSB I located last night is that it says the new software version is "01Cal14D". My local dealer would not print a copy of the TSB, so I had to hunt it down, and I can't be 100% sure that this is totally up to date.
I will most definitely clean the IAC and Throttle body to see if that helps first.
Thanks for the info guys!

| RE: 4.7L idle problem IP: Logged
Message: Actually, it is an idle screw, much like a carb - but DC would rather you didn't adjust it - that would make it tougher for them to diagnose if the idle problem is being caused by a dirty IAC or other problem. They want the PCM to be the only thing to control the idle through the IAC. I have still never seen a code set from the adjustment I did to make the 68mm TB from a manual tranny truck work on mine years ago.
I'd suggest cleaning and/or replacing the IAC, and the superchip like ch4ngv suggests, before tampering with it. In my case I knew it was the setting because I used the IAC that worked fine on my 65mm TB when I swapped.

Message: Any suggestions or tricks on which plugs to use? Platinum or Standard? I know the 5.2's liked to use 1 heat range colder plug than stock. Does anything like that apply to the 4.7's?
