 Subject: 4.7L Dipstick Problem Help!

Hello,
Just got a 2000 quad cab 4x4. Changed the oil and filter and filled the 6 quarts as shown in the owner's manual. Now it is showing as like a quart and a half overfilled.
I have seen other people mentioning this problem, they finally just renotched their dipstick.
Anyone have any info on this??? I don't like what I see so far...

Well, I don't have a 4.7 but my method on any engine is never to just add the amount of oil that is called for in the manual. You have no idea how much doesn't come out when you change the oil. It can vary depending on the temperature, the angle of the truck, etc. If the truck happens to be angled away from the drain plug, then you could leave a good amount in the pan. I always add about one quart less, start the engine let it circulate well, then cut the engine and give the oil time to drain back down to the pan. Then check it again and add the amount you need. This will keep you from overfilling and damaging the engine. I'm sure thousands of people just drain their oil, change the filter, and add the recommended amount and are just fine. But I would rather not chance it and it doesn't hurt anything at all to do it the way I do.

I have the 4.7 and it does take 6 quarts with a new filter. The dipstick is right on the full mark on level ground.
This is assuming you ran the truck after the oil/ filter change and let it sit for a while before taking a reading?
I personally would purchase a new dipstick from the dealer.

If you warmed the engine first, then allowed time for it to drain down into the pan before draining, I'm sure you got most of it out. Then when you fill the new filter up a bit and throw the rest of the 6 qts in, you have to run the engine again for a bit, shut it off and wait 15 minutes. THEN check the level on the stick (you are wiping it off first and then putting it back into the tube before taking your final reading right?).

I had the same problem on my 01 Dak 4x4 4.7 SLT
First of all, do not buy a new dipstick or make a mark on the original one.
Here is what you do, always change the oil in the morning after the motor sits all night. Do not start the motor, just change the oil like you always do without warming it up.
For some reason the oil takes along time to drain in the oil pan(6quarts).
When I do this on my Dak, with 6 quarts in her, the oil comes up to the full line. Try it.
You won't be disappointed.

Crazy thing about my 02's 4.7 it takes 5 and 1/2
quarts with filter change to show it right at the
correct level, not 6. Maybe duntov's stick is
going into engine too far. Might want to check
that duntov. Hell, maybe mine not going into
engine far enough! Maybe Dakotas dip sticks made
in China!!

When I changed the oil, the motor was warm, and I let it drain for at least 15 minutes. All the oil should have been out. I put in a new filter and put in exactly 5.5 quarts. It now reads a quart overfull. I build motors as a hobby and this makes me NERVOUS.... Is the dipstick wrong, or is the capacity in the manual wrong???

i went to a dealership in Lexington, Ky. I had been changing my oil myself before and was having the same problem everyone else is having. When the dealership changed the oil it came out the same as if i was changing the oil. quart to quart an a half past the full marker.

changed my oil again today. it was time to change again. put truck on ramps, let oil drain for 1/2 hr. was still doing a real slow drip. filled filter 1/2 full, added 5qts of oil. started truck let run a few minutes and went back an hour later and was about 1/4 in. past the safe area on the dipstick. truck was off ramps and on level ground when checked. contacted dodge through email. should hear something in two or three days.

Any word yet?
I'm coming up on my first oil change and would like to make sure all of the old oil is out. I like warming it up first to emulsify any dirt/grime in the oil but if I have to let it cool or just sit and drain for a long time to get all the old oil out I will do that instead.

I do my own changes on my 4.7. I refill with 5 quarts and then check and add until it hits the mark. Usually takes about 5.5-5.75 quarts.
I'd be worried too if 5 is putting you over the high mark. 5 gets me close to the low mark.

HERE IS THE INFO FROM CHRYSLER:
Thank you for your recent email to DaimlerChrysler Motors.
If you replaced the correct amount of oil per your owner's manual, and
the reading on the dipstick appears to indicate to much oil, the reason
for this is as follows.
The dipstick bottoms out in the pan, and will spring back .25-.5 inch
when pushed into tube. This is normal.
However, the oil level may indicate an over fill situation.
I hope this information is helpful.
TNJONES, WHAT IS THE MEASUREMENT ON THE DIPSTICK FROM THE HANDLE TO THE END AND FROM THE END OF THE THE SAFE AREA TO THE END OF THE STICK.
