Subject: Brakes-Specifically drums IP: Logged
Message: Haha, so get this...
I went in to my local Kwik Kar for a "FREE Brake Check!" just for the fun of it, and after taking it all apart and carefully examining my system, mechanics Willy, Fixit, and Howe conclusively decided that my entire brake system was about to go out and I would need to replace everything. The cost would only be about $850.00. LOL, I laughed all the way home.
Anyway, My question: How thick should the drums be? I always thought drums would last a pretty good amount of time if you kept good pads on em? It's about 1\4" to 3\8" right now if I remember correctly.
5.2L, 97, 64K, a few mods :)

Message: I just removed my drums on 2000 QC this last weekend. I had the new brake shoes ready, but I got the wrong ones (for smaller drum), not the 11" dia. The originals shoes still had 3/32" at thinnest point, 1/4" most everywhere else.
The new ones were the same. So I just WD-40 lightly the springs and moving parts, then used brake cleaner and cleaned the drums and shoes and put it back together. I also clicked the adjusters out about 5 clicks.
I didn't measure inside of drums but I'm sure they were fine.
The truck has slightly over 90,000. I replaced the fronts with rotors around 50,000 and the fronts had 1/2 life left, but rotors were still good so I put on the new front pads while I had the wheels off. Fronts are easy to change. The rears look more difficult with all the springs, but the drums weren't too bad to remove.
I don't know your mileage or driving habits, but I doubt you need new rears, and $850 is way too much.

Message: Rear Drums $59 ea. at Checkers Raspesos, Don't know how to spell it. lol. Made in the US, so you know you got good material. My original Bosch drums were warped.
2 Drums $120
Brake Shoes $$?
But, $850 is way too much. Was your Brake light on your dash on or ABS? If not. Mechanic Willy will even supply the free bumper sticker that says "Bend Over". lol

Message: Jeez, for $850.00 I'll replace your rear and
fronts including rotors and drums, wash and wax
your dak, rotate tires and degrease the engine
and I'll still make enough money to take the old
lady out to dinner at Burger Barf and fill my gas
tank with 35 cent gas priced at $2.00!
WOW, I hope no one falling for slick Willy's
scam!
