In response to the anti supercharger out there. It is safe to say that Supercharger does not equal abuse but rather enhance the performance of a deeply down tuned 5.9. Remember people this is 360 cubic inch V8 motor. 212 RWHP stock is just scratching the surface of what it can do. I have raised my daily driver to 381RWHP and it runs tighter than ever. And with stock internals. As long as you do not raise the stock piston psi over the limit the engine should return high numbers. The ford lightning is 345hp on a smaller motor and a much heavy truck. Dodge down tunes the 5.9 to save lives and smog. Unleash the beast under your hood.

are you suggesting that dodge "down tunes" the 5.9 by not adding a supercharger?

i mean.. it's great that you have 381 rwhp, but that's not just from "tuning".

No, I mean they could make that engine a lot meaner. They (Dodge) chose it's meager 212RWHP from a 360. I had a V6 that had 212rwhp. The 5.9 engine could do so much more if they let it.. Or maybe not, Could be the reason they retired it.

the magnum 5.9 was making the same power back in 1992. Dodge didnt need to do anything to make more power out of it... they needed to replace it.

and which they did.

i am not saying it was a bad motor... it was a great motor. Just compare it to chevy and ford motors back when it was first made. Everybody upgraded to more powerful motors and so did D/C.

wasnt trying to kick anybody in the balls on that one... i mean, i have a 5.2 in my 2000 durango and i like it. Now it's not a hot rod but the motor was never suppose to be. It was great for it's time but technology has changed and D/C finally figured that out. They were just trying to get rid of every 5.2/5.9 they had in surplus.

btw, the 5.2 isnt even dead yet. There is so many of them that they are still offered in the 1500 Vans... even though they shut down production like four or five years ago... while dodge sells every HEMI it makes.

"Then why is no one else having this problem? Dodge must have singled you out to pick on."

Try reading a little further. I've owned my first and last Dak for just over a year.

Beautiful powerful piece of Sh_t.

The dealers are crooks and Daimler offers no support. The worst fit and finish of any vehicle I've ever owned. It's had more recalls than any vehicle I've ever owned.

It's got a bad tranny that after 4 trips to 2 different dealers they still refuse to fix, or even admit is a problem. After the last time I drove it with a service manager in the cab and showed him it didn't work, he told me the problem was that I had abused it. He told Daimler the problem that day when I demonstrated the problem was that I was shifting without depressing the clutch!!

It needed major internal work to the motor due to a defective head when it was only 4 months old.

It's got more squeeks and rattles than my baby's crib toys. I've got wind whistles, rattling ball joints, trim falling off, paint with fish eyes and flaking chrome on the rear bumper.

I found loose screws and clips laying on the intake the day I brought it home, the clutch resevoir was never mounted from the factory, the screw holes to mount the resevoir had never even been driled, the shift horn was never torqued down from the factory and has had to be retorqued 3 times since new (yes, by the dealer). The front end alignment was so bad I've already had to replace the front tires.

I've gone from one of the biggest Dodge enthusiasts to one of their biggest detractors due to my experiances with this vehicle. The truck only has 10,000 miles on it and I just hope it stays in one piece til I'm not upside-down on my loan. I feel sorry for the sucker that takes it off my hands.

03, 4.7, 5sp man, 3.9 LSD, piece of Sh_t

Holy crap that's a long laundry list there!
If that's all true, that is crazy. I've never seen so many problems like you listed and not be noticed right away.

I've romped the ever living sh*t out of my 4X4 and after a lift and 22K miles it is starting to need tires, but they have worn even all the way. I never bothered to align it after I lifted it!

So far my only problems with lose sh*t was from what I did to it. I'm going to start taking it easy on my truck with the off road stuff now though. It's not even 2 yrs old yet and I've wacked stuff and caught air in it, etc etc etc.
If it were a Chevy. It been broke by now :-P

lol, TnJones,

I feel for you. I had a similar problem with a brand new 1998 Chevy Blazer. That's why i switched to dodge.

I had incredible good luck with my 2000 Dodge Durago 5.9 until 50k. Then everything started to go. Heater Core, U-Joint, Wheel bearings. Vibration.

At 65k, Torque converter and transmission rebuild. Wooo, i hope i'm done for awhile.

The rest of the interior has been top notch fit and finish. No rattles yet. I guess, i'm one of the lucky ones.

The only reason why i still have my piece is because, i like the dam look of my Durango. The new ones look like a darn mini van.

So, there i am with my beloved Durango. I pray to the good lord every single day that she doesn't fall apart anymore on me.

All i know, is that the next truck i get will be a foreign joby. I have given up on American Manufactures. I love supporting American made vehicles, but you don't really get much support from the American manufactures that sold you their piece.

But, i will be driving my Durango for another 5 or 6 years.

..they didn't need to..but they could have. Dodge has not looked at the truck market as a hot rod market until this year with the srt-10. They have always been really conservative...throughout the 80's and 90's. That said i would rather get in there and get my hands dirty and find a way to make my own power..then let the factory hand me the same thing everybody else has!! mike

P.s. Dodge transmissions suck!!!I do agree with that!!

you gotta realize that the 360 was designed when the carb was king. you can get more power by getting rid of the multi port and putting on the right carb alone. I used to have a 360 in the 96 Ram which we worked to ever living piss out of then I would drive to sh*t out of it we haven't had a mechnical problem with it ever (except a new starter but that's really nothing) and we never really kept up on the rotine maintenance. and Kevin is absolutely right about getting her to breathe. there is this guy named Sam whom I buy preformance parts in california (best prices I have found on the internet and he primarly specialize in Dakota R/T) who got his R/T to breath easy and now is getting that magical one H.P. per C.I. (actually 361 but close enough) number at his rear wheels (naturally asparited) and it's not even a stroked 408. Dodge does do a great detuning job though I can't even get my hand down the stock intake tube and I have three cats, the muffler was over two feet long, and I can't wait to see what they did when I really start to get into that bad boy (heads, valves, etc.). yeah and there trans CAN be junk but that 96 ram has 136k mi on it and still has no troubles with the tranny. my old boss has the Durango R/T to had he has had alot of sh*t with it. he said he would have sold it but he done so much to it that it would make it a even bigger loss.

In response to one of the above posts about removing the speed limiter, I think all you have to do is have your PCM reflashed or buy a new one. Not sure on all that. Mine doesn't shut off at 100mph. '00 4.7L

In another part of the forum someone said they thought the speed limiter was lower on the Daks with Aluminum drive lines.

My 4X4 has a steel one and it seems to go to about 120MPH before it shuts down.
