Subject: help me start my truck
IP: Logged

Message:
I just finished a few days work of removing the intake manifold and fixing the leaking plenum pan and while I was at it, I put in new rockers. I just tried to start the truck and all I can hear is the starter spinning. There isn't any other sound that I can hear. If it was having a hard time starting I would expect some sort of puffing and chugging from the combustion, but I only hear the starter spinning. I double and triple checked all the connections I could think of and can't find a thing that isn't connected. Does anyone have any ideas?
Mark

I should have mentioned, also, that I checked for codes (the check engine light comes on after the starter spins). The only code is "12". No help there.

Is the engine turning at all? Or is it not getting that far, and something electrical is being a problem here? Did you do something like pull the fuel pump relay (though this would not do exactly what you're saying, it would keep you from starting up), and not put it back in? If it's not trying to kick over at all, I'm tempted to say it sounds like an electrical problem. Did you hook up the engine ground to the back of the passenger side valve cover on the rear bolt??

I should follow up by saying that I have checked a few things:

I verified that there is spark by pulling a plug and watching the spark.
There seems to be compression since I could feel air puffing from the spark plug hole.
I tried pouring gasoline into the throttle body (about a tablespoon) and it resulted in nothing.
I also moved the flywheel to TDC and removed the distibutor cap to verify that the rotor was pointing at the #1 wire.
The new rockers I installed can be seen moving when I take the oil filler cap off the valve cover (modified valve covers).

The thing that concerns me is that even after cranking numerous times I don't smell any gas. Shouldn't I?
It seems I have gas (or at least I supplied it), I have spark, and I have air. What else is there? Is this a sensor problem of some kind?

What can I check?
Thanks for any help,
Mark

Regarding the engine ground... yes, I connected it, but I was wondering about that. I have new valve covers which have been powdercoated and I put some new grade 8 bolts in place of my old ones which were terribly rusted. Would something about that configuration prevent it from grounding properly? Can I verify a proper ground?
Thanks for your response,
Mark

Give it a splash of fuel down the intake. If it tries to run, it's not getting fuel.

Tried it. See my above post.

I'm going to readjust my rockers and see what kind of difference I can make with that.

Thanks for the responses,
Mark

Ok, so everything is turning, it's just not starting the engine up.

Re-adjusting the rockers would be a good idea. When I first did mine, I had the same problem. My rockers were too tight. What it sounded like was the engine was trying to turn, but I got what sounded like a small backfire through the intake. Adjusted all the rockers again, problem solved. The ground would probably not prevent you from starting up, as I did crank mine over one time before I realized I forgot to hook it back up. I'm not sure if the powdercoating prevents the connection being made like normal paint does, so that is something to consider, possibly scratch some coating away so you can make a good connection there.

One other thing, when I'm adjusting mine, I pull the fuel pump relay fuse so when I'm cranking the engine to cycle the cylinder I'm working on to TDC, it's not sending fuel through. If you did the same thing, make sure you put it back in :-)
