Subject: Supercharger=abuse?

Message:
Someone responded to a post I made and I thought it would be fun to hear feedback and debate on this issue. I for one disagree but there are many applications to keep in mind so I will limit the scenario.

5.9 with 25k miles
7-8lb Vortech SQ-1 trim Supercharger
GS Motorsport Liquid intercooler
GS Motorsport R/T headers
Spintech True Dual exhaust
MI intake
Autolite 23's
52MM TB
GS Motorsport Fuel rails
Shift kit
Crane Cams Fireball ignition w/ retard

Everything else in the engine is stock including the PCM
Where is the abuse?
What parts of the Engine is getting it?
Why is the Engine now run and idle better than stock?
Why has normal driving gas mileage gone up?

A blower puts more strain on the engine than stock, that's pretty clear. Maint is higher, bascuase you have to take care of it. All that extra torque puts more of a strain on everything down stream as well.

The other thing you have to remember is our definition of abuse and the companies definition is differant. Our goals are different, too. Take good care of it, do themaint, don't beat it up too bad. To us, that's not abuse.

DC/GM/Ford/etc say it's abuse because they don't want to be replacing transmissions, because you increased the torque by 50% (DC has enough transmission toruble as it is). It's a matter of perspective.

Well, lets answer your qestions one at a time shall we?

1. Q Where is the abuse?
A You're more apt to put your foot into it

2. Q What parts of the Engine is getting it?
A Pistons, crank

3. Q Why is the Engine now run and idle better than stock?
A Speculative.

4. Q Why has normal driving gas mileage gone up?
A This one is tricky... your back end is higher than your front end now due to the weight of the supercharger and you're now always going down hill :) hence better milage.

Mileage, to a point, goes up with more HP (providing you can keep your foot out of it) due to the fact that to maintain, say 50 mph, the engine is working more efficiently than it use to, so it doesn't have to work as hard, thus it saves gas. Once you start dumping in tons of fuel into the engine, well, that theory goes right out the window :-) Bolt ons like CAI, cat-back, headers, etc, allow the engine to work like it's suppose to, but they don't do these at the factory for various reasons. Sometimes it is more maintainence (K&N CAI requires cleaning, or replacing a $40-$60 filter, paper filter is couple of dollars), sometimes it's for comfort (smooth shifting auto transmission doesn't last as long as one that has a shift-kit in it, because a smooth shifting auto transmission is partially engaged longer to make that smooth shift, creating wear and tear, but a quick shifting auto transmission will jolt you = complaints from average consumer). Another example is the 180 t-stat, it allows the engine to typically stay at the optimal operating temperature, even in hot weather, but in cold weather, especially on the highway, the heater doesn't work very well at all, so they use a 195 t-stat instead.

What is and what isn't abuse?
Well, when it comes to the warranty, they have to prove that the modifications caused the problem to void the warranty, which makes sense. I mean, if you're running a supercharger, and you come in with a busted Crank or something, safe to say, it's probably the supercharger that caused the problem, and I doubt you would be able to find a good lawyer to help you out.

Why does the engine idle better?
Like I said above, the engine is running more like it's suppose to know with the modifications. I have similar modifications, minus the supercharger, and she idles much better now than she use to.

Oh, back to the gas mileage. Stock, with 53K miles, I was getting at best, 16.5MPG on the highway. Now, with CAI, M-1, 1.7 rockers, Cat-back, cat, headers, PCM, i'm getting over 20mpg highway.

It is safe to say that Supercharger does not equal abuse but rather enhance the performance of a deeply down tuned 5.9. Remember people this is 360 cubic inch motor. 212 RWHP stock is just scratching the surface of what it can do. I have raised it to 381RWHP and it runs tighter than ever. And with stock internals. As long as you do not raise the stock piston psi over the limit the engine should return high numbers. The ford lightning is 345hp on a smaller motor and a much heavy truck. Dodge down tunes the 5.9 to sve lives. Unleash the beast under your hood.

Anyway you look at it the motor is under a tremendous amount more of strain WHEN under boost. Plain and simple.

There is a reason why the stock headgaskets don't last :-)

However that is not to say you can't run trouble free if you maintain your system well and insure the other components of the engine are strenghtend BEFORE you reach their limitations.
Word on the street tends to be the pistons can take 500 RWHP, RODS & CRANK closer to 700RWHP.
Of course this is providing your air/fuel ratio is dialed in where it should be which is always a superchargers guys worst nightmare.

My ATI set-up dynoed 401RWHP and 436RWTQ, lots more still in it, and yes bottom end is stock.

BOLT-ON AND HANG-ON is my motto!

Speeddemon,
Is your RT lowered and do you have any problems with crap hitting your intercooler? Just heard from different people on the board that the location of the Procharger intercooler is mounted too low and gets damaged easily.
