Subject: buying a '99 5.9 r/t IP: Logged
Message: I have a friend who is willing to sell me his '99 Dakota 5.9 r/t club cab for $5,000. It has 82,000 miles on it and has been used as a work truck. I test drove it last weekend and floored it from a stand still and the transmission felt like it slipped and then when it tried to shift into second it redlined itself and missed the gear so I let off the gas. IT felt like I blew out the trany. I looked in my rear view and noticed that there was alot of black smoke behind me. THen when I was just driving down the road I could hear a ticking noise comming from the engine. Does this thing just need a bad tune-up or should I look into getting another truck?

Message: 5K for any vehicle is cheap! Problem with the tranny is quite normal. Try adjusting the Throttle Valve cable on the TB, if that doesn't fix it, your looking at 2k max to fix it. Now the black smoke could be a bad cat or running to rich. Now the ticking could be anything from Injectors, Lifters, exhaust leak, and much more. Even new 2002 owners complain about ticking noises. If you have time and some mechanical skill, you could fix it up. How's the body and tires? Also take off the Air hat then open up the blades and look towards the back of the engine, if you see oil in the intake, it has a belly pan leak. Don't get it if you can't afford to fix it.

Message: Too right, Tony.
Mike, the other thing you might want to do is take it to a mechanic you trust for a full evaluation. It'll cost a few dollars, but it will be money well spent. From that point, you'll be able to price out repairs and decide if it is a project you want/are able to attack. It might be a nice ride, but if I were in your place, I'd get a little professional advise. Especially if you're not overly mechanically fluent,...D

Message: BUY IT!!! For $5000 even if it needs a new engine($1200) and tranny rework($1100 for an awsome tranny that will withstand anything you throw at it) You will still beunder $9K which is a steal for a R/T.

Message: i have a 02 dakota r/t that my brother passed down to me when he got a ram,and a wife lol...anyway he always complained of the transmission not shifting into second and i expected a lot of my money going into tranny, but so far i havent had any problems..it had sat for awhile and did have that same problem of not wanting to shift into 2nd. But suggestion if you buy it just keep checking the transmission fluid levels right and you shoudlnt have a problem, but that has been a talked about defect with the dakotas kinda like the paint jobs..
