Message: You might have a cv joint going bad. If you get in the mud alot I would think that is the problem. If not, maybe you are like me and dont use the 4x4 enough and need to do what I had to do. put it in 4hi and drive forward and reverse in a figure 8 pattern. This will cause the grease in the cv's to get all mashed around and do its job. on mine this stopped the popping and all is well. Other than that, I have no idea what it could be.

Message: This may sound too simple, but check the caliper and pads. If your caliper bolts are loose it COULD cause a pop sound and squealing from the pads not hitting the rotor right. Also check the wheel bearing, steering rack & steering shaft. My steering shaft was causing the popping noise on my '00 QC. When that was getting replaced they also noticed the rack was leaking. All replaced under warranty of course(at 29K miles).

Message: If your "new" ball joints are the same crappy factory ball joints your truck came with, you better replace them again. I had a popping sound coming from my left front wheel, replaced the upper and lower ball joints with Moog problem solvers, and now it is quiet again up front. I'm at 56K miles and I still have lots of meat on the brake pads and no rotor warp. If your wheel sounds like it is squeaking, you might want to check the brakes to see if the chirper is touching the disc brake...you might just need new pads. My fiance's Chevy was doing that same thing last month. A squeak when she turned left or right but basically quiet when going straight ahead. New pads fixed the problem.
Anyway, good luck. These trucks seem to break more often than most. I baby mine in the hopes that I might have it paid for by the time it dies on me.

Message: kevin,
i dont know if they are the same as the factory but i got the ball joints from advance, i replaced the first set at 50000 plus miles and my truck is at 74000 right now,i took the wheel off and the pad has a lot more wear to go,so i still dont know why its squealingor popping for that matters.

Message: I had the same problem w/my 98 4x and it was all started by who ever aligned it before I bought it. Who ever did it didnt tighten the two upper control arm bolts enough and it started to work free and the caused the outer right side tie rod to go bad as well and it was a nightmare. I almost lost the whole left side of the front end. The tech said that it was so bad that even he wouldnt drive it to test it, so I would check the bolts and follow all the points in between the two wheels. And dont take it to the dealer there policys and prices suck.
