Subject: Wierd coolant leak Help? IP: Logged
Message: Was driving home today jumped on it like always do down the pike. pulled into the garage smelled the coolant.
Best of my knowledge it looks like it is leaking between the Engine and the tranny. It leaks like a race horse pissing. Checked the back of the head gaskets with a mirror and they look dry. Are there freeze plugs or (soft plugs) between the engine block and the tranny? The leaks looks like it is inside. NO water in the oil(yet) 2001 R/T with SC 8lb boost and intercooler. Also all the visable freeze plugs are also dry. The SC has been on for 4 month the cooler went on Sunday but have had several runs without problems like this. Leak is definetly from the lower back of the engine??????

Message: It sounds like your heater core, if you have a 5.9 in that thing. The heater core hoses are to the left of the brake master cylinder if you are looking at it from the front of the vehicle. I had to get my heater core replaced at 50,000 miles.
Didn't want to do it myself because, the AC radiator thingy is above the heater core. Thus, they had to drain my AC then take the that out before you can take the heater core out.
Go to any AC shop. They can do the job. about $500. Ouch.

Message: Well, so far have found one freeze plug leaking (front) and the tranny is being removed to find the big leak as we read. Stay tuned.. All this from a garaged and babied 2001 R/T with 25258 miles. Way to go Dodge your making great Trucks. Of course the warranty ran out by years in Feb 01. O'yeh it is supercharged but freeze plugs as a result, Don't think so. Anybody? Good news? Not heater core, head gaskets or intake gaskets. DODGE great idea to put freeze plugs behind the engine between the tranny and galvanized to boot.
How about brass you cheap asses.

Message: Kevin, all i gotta say is lol.
My truck (Durango 5.9, 2000) was hell of a truck till around 50k. No problems what so ever. Then it all happened.
1. Heater Core ($500)
2. Transmission & Torque Converter ($2,000)
3. U-Joints & Shaft ($300+)
4. Rear Wheel bearings ($35)
5. Just bought some Elderbrock IAS shocks ($275)
This does not include the coutless hours of trying to figure out the problems.
I expect a truck to be problem free for at least 5 years / 100,000 miles. Minor problems are no biggy. But look at my list. This is just terrible. :(
Next truck i get will be foreign. I have given up on American made crap. My friend has an Nissan X-Terra, which was bought brand new. Has like 125,000 miles. He hasn't replaced anything yet, except for general maintenance.

Message: Yeh I had also had 88 a Nissan pick up. The only thing and I mean ONLY thing I changed was the oil every 3k. Sold it 6 years later with 75k and was as tight as the day I bought it new. Still had factory everything.. including brakes and tires. Why can't dodge put out something like that. Go ahead dodge lovers lets here it. But only from those who have had NO problems with there trucks what so ever at all. I mean nothing... Where waiting! Or even better back there product for longer than 3 yrs or 36k. Thats weak for the price of cars/trucks these days. A BMW X5 3.0ie is not much more than a fully loaded Durango and yet they give 4 yrs full maintanence on everything, tires, brakes oil changes,, heck car washes are free. Dodge,, not even on there flag ship vehicle that is more than the X5 do they offer this. Things that make you go hmmmm?
