Subject: Questions about 4.7L
IP: Logged

Message:
I need some help so I figured I would come to the professionals. Just got a new Dakota with the 4.7L and I was wondering. What can I (keep in mind that I have no automotive skill so when I say "I" I mean a mechanic who won't screw me) do to have my Dakota pushing roughly 300HP but not ruin the warranty and not empty the bank account either? I figured the only thing that can add that much is either a turbo or a SC but I’ve been told they void the warranty. Help please. Thanks, John.

300 hp Crank is not hard;

70mm Throttle Body
JBA Shorty Headers
True Dual Exhaust
KenneBell Optimizer II
Fan Clutch Removed
Intense Performance Z-Tube CAI
Relocate IAT
HO CAMS

And that will pretty much put you right there. I Dyno 263 Rear Wheel on mine add 17% for drive train lose since I have a stick shift and you are looking at about 307 HP crank. Good Luck

It's a PCM reprogram by KenneBell Racing in Rancho Cucamonga, CA . Here is a link to Optimizer II by KenneBell.

28 Ft Lbs sounds great.

Sending in the PCM and $339 is still a little touchy for me.

I wish there was a Hypertech programmer.

Those guys would make a butt load of $$$ from us if they made one of those. I'd rather spend the $$ into one of those so I can make my own adjustments, tire size offset, etc.

Old Fool,

I've put these on my '00 Dak 4.7L

Intenseperformance Z-tube CAI
68 Fastman
Kennebell Optimizer II
Gibson Shorty Headers/single swept-side cat back

No dyno shops nearby, so I can only guess how much hp those mods make - maybe 30hp?

what do you think?

MrMan, Probly close to that. The HO CAMS and the true Duals is where I picked up the most with mine. I didn't Dyno mine till after I had everything on, but I picked up 3/10ths in the 1/4 mile just from the True Duals. I'de say somewhere near 20 or 25 from that alone. I had a cat back system on before it also. The 'Y' pipe on the 4.7L and the main CAT really hold them back. It also helped the Headers too. I've seen were KenneBell sez the headers only give about 2 hp on a stock engine, but if you have looked at the 'Y' pipe you can see that even the best flowing headers can't get by that.

04BlackDakSLT,

There are many things to do to your Dak before you go SC. Furthermore, doing the following and then going SC will create a "total is greater than the sum of the parts" kind of situation.

Try this:

1. Cold Air Intake: K&N FIPK II, Intense Performance etc.

2. Throttle Body: go to www.thefastman.net and get a 68mm TB from Dan. He's very good and knows his stuff.

3. Robert Shaw 180 Thermostat. Best $9 you'll ever spend in your life.

4. Autolite 3923's.

5. Exhaust. There are many options, cat back, true duals etc. I choose a Borla catback, high flow cat, custom Y-pipe, and removed the two pre-cats. I've seen plenty of Daks (even SC'd Daks) with a single 3" exhaust with high flow cats and removed pre-cats. Use Dan's O2 simms when you remove the precats.

6. HO cams and intake manifold. Dan has these too, or KRC.

7. Viper electric fan. (socal dakotas)

8. Underdrive pulley. (truck performance)

9. KenneBell Optimizer II: After all this, get a PCM flash. If you flash too early, you'll have to get re-flashed to go with the new mods.

10. Once all this is done, you'll have a fast Dak with pretty good gas mileage too. If you still want more, go SC.

Just my opinion...

Old Fool,

How'd you get "true dual" exhaust on a Dakota? I asked my local muffler shop about setting that up for me. I told that I'd bring in some headers and let them replace/build everything from there back. They told me "No way". Something about the O2 sensors and cats and room and a bunch of stuff. Too bad for the muffler shop, I was ready to pay for duals. Ended up with just a nice dual cat back system.

O.F., HOw old are you anyway?

Remember me, you sold me some OEM tailights, Thanks.

I have many of the mods you have, on a 4.7, with a real tranny. I definitely know you're putting down what you say you are, based on other peoples mods and dynos for the 4.7.

BTW, I've been running 3923's for a while, and didn't notice any real change from my stock plugs, I was there doing the HO manifold anyway, and they're cheap.

I saw one of your posts that said that plug is really on colder for those pushrod engines, and the 4.7 should have something like 5223's for one colder in an Autolite.

This Rhight?

01, 4.7, LSD, 5spd manny tranny
HO cams and intake
HOmebrew true CAI with K&N
Ported 68mm TB
Iat adjuster
3923's
No belt clutch/fan
NO 'death flash' on stock PCM
Removed third cat
heater core water shut off valve

Best advice I can give is, LEAVE IT AS IS!
A factory 4.7 is not a racing engine. It will not
take the added stress very long.

I'm sorry RadioMan but i think you are incorrect. There are people here who have ran their 4.7 hundreds of times down the track pushing it to the limit. After thousands of miles the insides look brand new. Yes its not designed for high PSI applications or 150 shot, but N/A or mildly forced inductions it performs exceptionally well.

True; RadioMan might want to take a good look at the lower end design, its quite beefy. Mine continues to hold up very well.

RadioMan: You are wrong, a non pushrod engine actually can handle more stress than a similar setup pushrod engine. Less friction makes less problems, logic.

Old Fool: You are wrong, the thread starter has an 2004 Dakota (user name), we cannot use the Kenne bell optimizer yet due to programming changes in '04 computers.

04BlackDakSLT: I am sorry to say this, but to get a nice dual setup, try considering GS Motorsports. Look them up in this forum with the search tool and make your decision. My webpage Http://www.reubengathright.com/2004DodgeDakota.html should help you get more power and performance. I recommend first, upgrading the stock tires to a shorter height(26.5) this gives you better handling on the interstate, just get the computer reprogrammed at the dealer with the new tire ratio.

04BlackDakSLT, Have fun with the SCer. I think as soon as I get back to Texas this Winter I will pick me up one for My truck.

Todd, yes the 1 off colder is the 5223s. The 5224s are the stock Autolite Replacements.

RadioMan, I'm wish you would have told me this before I put my 4.7L down the track more than 500 times in the past 2 years with 3,500+ rpm Clutch Dumps, and collected these 5 trophies I have for Street Tire Division. Since I have been racing it, I have had to rebuild the NV 3500 trans (under Warranty of Course), but the 4.7L is still running A-1 getting me 17 to 18 mpg City and 23+ highway mileage.

rgathright, I've been wrong before, Thanks. I wasn't even paying any attention to his Sig. KenneBell does say they should have one available around December for the '04s. I hope that is true for all those with New Trucks. It certainly does wonders with several good Mods.
