Subject: Oil pressure dropped to ZERO at light...
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, so ive seen this happen before to others. I pulled to the light and my Oil Pressure dropped to zero. Light came on said check gauges..then the pressure went back up. It tends to be wavering a bit more than usual but right around the halfway point..it had always been running a little higher.

Ive heard of this as the signs of failing oil pump and it can cause engine failure..should i just replace it now?? Thanks.

Check a couple things first. What year and mileage on your truck?

Obviously check your oil level first. If that is fine check your oil pressure sending unit. Many have reported them going bad and the low oil warning is nothing more than a faulty sensor. I think they are only about $20 or so from the dealer.

If that is not the problem then you may have pump problems. However, the pump may not actually be bad. Excessive sludge buildup can clog the oil pickup screen, resulting in lower oil pressure. You may be able to clean it off, button it all back up and be fine. If not then a new pump may be in order. Some people have reported pretty good success with engine flushing. Not the additive DIY kind but the kind where your truck is hooked up to a machine and they run detergents through it. Jiffy Lube and others offer the service, cost is around $100 or so. If you have high mileage though yhe flush may actually do more harm than good.

Hope this helps.

I have a friend who owns a Durango ('01, I think) and had the same problem. They ended up having to replace the engine because of this. He didn't catch it early enough. I wouldn't wait on this.

Thanks for the responses. Thats what ive heard before. I have 130,000 miles on it...so yeah, alot of miles and no engine flush in future. Ive only heard bad things about flushes...tranny, engine, etc. I use syn, or part syn oil and HD filters...oil level is fine.

Would "flushing" just the oil pan be an option.....meaning instead of flushing the whole motor by running the flush fluid through the motor, could a solvent of some kind just be injected/sprayed into the oil pan via the drain plug?

I would think this could clean all the sludge sitting in the oil pan and maybe even clean the pickup tube screen.

well, the 4.7 does fill directly to the crank case, so if you had some sort of quick flash solvent that wouldnt leave anything in the pan you could just pour it in the fill spout, however, i wouldnt advise it, just pour about a quart of ATF+4 in there and let it idle for 20 min or so drain and fill with oil, that should knock all the sludge out
