Message: I have a 2002 qc 4 x 4 the brakes seem to fade very quickly if you have to stop fast. I don't feel very trusting with the brakes if i have to stop fast. does anybody know of an upgrade, wether factory or other that might be availible.

Message: All I know is my '02 rotors are the same size as the ones on my old Ford Ranger; which is not very comforting knowing that the Ranger weighed at least 1000 lbs less. I just don't think there is enough rotor surface there for the weight of the QC.

Message: SSBC has a rotor/brake upgrade you can get. There are other options as well, but that is the first one that comes to mind. Personally I would get a good set of sticky pads first and see how that works. A lot of times a simple pad change can increase your breaking power 25% or more.

Message: Rick, I have same year and 4x4 as you do. My front
rotors warped, like 99% of Dakotas do. I installed
Bendix rotors and ceramic pads. All parts from
Advance Auto Parts. Cost was around $175.00 doing
the job yourself.
DON'T take it to the dealer! You'll get ripped off
plus only get more junk installed.
Good luck..

Message: Rick, I bought a set of Raybestos BruteStop drilled and sloted rotors and a set of Raybestos SuperStop pads for my 00 2WD Dak. Around $200 for everything from rockauto.com. The brakes seem firmer with this combo and the rotors have not warped.
Best $200 I have spent on the truck!

Message: thanks for all the info, the only problem that I know that I will have is that when I bought the truck I bought the extended service policy which expires in 2009. I know they will say It will void the warranty if I do this.

Message: Rick, check that extended service policy close.
Most of them will not cover normal ware out items
like brakes, battery, tires and so on.
Hell, DaimlerChrysler's so called 3/36 bumper to
bumper warranty doesn't even cover their junk
brakes past 10k. Goes to show that DC knew the
junk they put on Dakotas would never last.
Most extended warranties you pay extra for is a
joke and rip off!

Message: Also, beware that the caliper bolt holes in the spindle are known to strip. So, if you have any brake work done, or do it yourself, beware! You need to pay special attention to the caliper bolts; both removal and re-installation...lots of gentle persuasion, lubrication and cleaning of the threads. Never use an air wrench! Elsewise, you'll be finding yourself in a bad situation...like a new spindle or a less than ideal thread fix.

Message: Rick I have the same truck that you do.
I know this is an old post but I recently found
out a little more information that I thought I'd
pass along.
Apparently the 2002 Dakotas had 11.3" diameter
rotors up front, which are severely undersized for
the weight of this truck.
Dodge appears to have learned their lesson as the
2003 Dakotas came with 12.1" diameter rotors which
provide much better braking performance.
They also began using disc brakes on the rear that
use 12.3" rotors vs. the drum brakes on the 2002
model.
Anyway back to your problem...
I went with EBC Green Stuff pads (model #DP71318)
and EBC cross dimpled and slotted rotors (model
#GD7028) about 3 years ago.
The difference from factory was incredible, and I
definitely give me a lot more confidence in the
braking abilities of my truck.
The only issue I have is that now after a few
years, the rotors are badly warped and even have a
few heat cracks, however I have been told by both
EBC and my local parts guy at Chrysler (who
incidentally recommends EBC as a performance
alternative to OEM brakes) that this is because
they are so undersized.
Anyway I'm in the process of ordering a new set
(which is why I happened to have the part numbers
handy) and I'll see how it goes this time around.
Cost wise, they are significantly cheaper than a
lot of the big name brands like Brembo. It's
about $360 CDN including tax and shipping for
everything (front pads and rotors).
So if I can make them last another 3 years I
suppose that's not too bad.
