Subject: That stupid door binger! IP: Logged
Message: Anyone else get real annoyed when you want to crank the tunes on your truck and have the doors open, but that stupid door ajar sensor just keeps binging and binging and binging?
Well here is the answer... (Maybe this is a programmeable option, but I don't know how to shut it off so here's another way).
Take off the plastic kick guard on the bottom of the drivers door jamb (just pull it up). Then take off the kick panel kext to the emergency brake pedal.
You'll see some black box with three wiring harnesses. In the middle harness there are two wires for the driver and passenger door switches. The wire colors are:
DRIVER DOOR: TAN
PSSGR DOOR: TAN w/ Red
Verify this with a Voltmeter. The wires will be +12V with the door closed, and get's grounded out when the door switch opens.
So, I just clipped these two wires and put a dual pole switch in series and mounted the switch under the dash. (You'll want this on a switch otherwise your interior light won't come on anymore either when you open the door). So you just flip the switch when you need to stop the binging!
YAY!

I didn't want to eliminate all bings, but that would have been my second choice probably!

Message: bad dak - what year? I don't think that works on the newer ones... In fact I can't even find the damn door switch. They're hidden on the 2001. Open, close, open doesn't work either.

Message: The new ones use a 'flux disrupt" to indicate movement of the door. The sensor is located under the catch in the door, and it signals the "timing box" at the drivers side kick panel.

I like the switch idea...may do that.
The other thing I was thinking is that you could tear apart that little black box and remove the speaker from the circuit board. I was thinking about doing just that sometime, but I think I'll do the switch thing.

Message: caulk04, I did just that (romoved the speaker) a
long time ago in my 02. I got tired of hearing
the damn thing for every little stupid thing. All
the warning lights on the dash work fine.
I did not remove the speaker either. Just cut a
trace feeding it does the trick. You can always
solder across the cut trace later if you wish.

Message: Was working on my truck today. Got fed-up with the "binger" while I was working under the dash and trying to listen to the radio. Messed around with it a bit, and turns out that pulling the power door lock fuse out killed it.
My Dak's a 1998.
I'm gonna remember that for sure. I work with the radio on and the door open most of the time.

Message: Hey Kory, next time you work on your dak and have the key turned to the ACC position (don't know if it will work with anyother positions) push the button in that is in your door jam and let go, it should stop. Oh and by the way i think it will only work with the drivers side, but you can leave both doors open though.
Mine is a 98 too and i found this out by just getting mad at it and i pushed it in with my foot and when i let go, it was like it magicaly stoped, so give it a try.

Message: I discovered how to stop the binger on my 2004 QC. Open drivers door, take a screwdriver and push the latch down inside the door jam. Put a chair or something against the door to remind you to put the latch back up, or you can't close the door.

Message: I use two relays to power mine when the door is open. One is a "holding" relay activated by a momentary switch. I open the door - which provides ground for the relay coils- and touch the momentary switch -which provides the positive 12v. The radio is then powered until the door is closed. This won't work on all systems. But a variation will. On some, a diode is needed to "dump" the coil voltage, and to prevent feedback. But the design is simple, just use common sense applied to your systems particulars. of course, installing a regular door pin switch is the simplest design to "ground" the relay coil. Then you don't have to worry about any feedback to the timer box.

Message: BTW, you should always try to get your power from the same feed that supplys the circut you are supplying. It would be a very rare occurance, but there is the possibility of creating a series circut voltage with todays electronics. A circut that by disign, only "replaces" the existing switch for the device, will not create any problems. I have used the above method for years in different cars, with no trouble. There have been many variations of the design -relevant to the vehicle- , but the simplest is the seperate door-pin switch to provide ground to a relay. To save the aggravation of the relay constantly engaging and possibly powering the radio, the second relay is added and wired to be a holding relay by the use of a momentary switch. The holding relay engages the switching relay to power the radio, and the common ground of the pin switch , released the circut when the door is closed. It will not engage unless the door is open again and the momentary switch is depressed.
You should still use the 1 amp diode across the coil -anode facing ground, so that the relay coil will dump its energy and not spike the radio. The relay coil can act the same as an ignition coil when the circut is opened. About 50 to 100 volts dc at 200 milliamps to your radio would not be a good thing. Use the diode!
