 Subject: Want more power - help

Just bought a new 04 4.7L Dakota. While it has more power than other small pickups I've driven, I'd like some more. Not looking to tear down the motor, or void my warranty and of course it still must pass California smog.
I'm really new to this and have no idea where to start. Don't mind spending some money to get more power, but also want the truck to remain reliable. I'd spend up to $1000, maybe more depending on what I could get for that.
Any help from you veterans would be much appreciated.

Gears. You're pretty limited right now on the 4.7 as compared to options available for other engines. Definitely free up choke points like the air cleaner and exhaust. Gears, however, will give you more punch for the power you have, and thanks to overdrive, even with 3.90 gears, you'll still have a very mild final drive ratio, so a mileage hit is minimal.
