Subject: hard/failing to start dakota IP: Logged
Message: I am hoping some one can give me some ideas on what might be wrong with my Dak.
I have a 97 dakota 4x4 with a 5.2 liter and an auto tranny with 92,000 on it.
over the last couple of weeks the truck has not wanted to start. When I turn the key it will crank over but not catch right off,but after 3-4 seconds of cranking it will catch but will run louzy for a few more second then jump right up and run normal till i shut it off then the whole thing happens again. Now last nigh it totaly died when I put it in to park and now will not start at all it the starter just cranks. It's like its either not getting any fuel or spark.Any ideas on what this could be?
Would the need for new plugs cause some thing like this?
This has been a very frustrating truck to own I've had WAY too many repair bill on it including the ball joints, imagine that.
any thought would be most helpful.

Message: Lot's of things can do this. First, check fuel pressure. It should attain proper pressure pretty quickly, and then should maintain it for a while after shutting off the key.
Crank the engine over for 30-60 sec. Then pull out a spark plug. If it smells like fuel, the fuel system is probably OK.
If that's OK, then do a good tune up: plugs, wires, cap rotor. Use a spark checker to make sure you're getting a solid spark. Check the coil. Also, make sure the distributer turns when the engine is cranked over.
Check compression; although I'd be surprised if that was the problem.
If all that checks out and it still won't start, then take it to a shop who can put it on an analyzer and test each component, or buy a quality analyzer. Be prepared to follow the service manual and check all the sensors.

Message: my 97 5.2 4x4 was acting up just the same, and sometime would cut off at idle. had the fuel pump replace, and it fixed it, of course that was a $600 job. so, you may have to bite the bullet and do the same, but I hope for your sake thats not the case. i even cleaned my TB and replaced TPS and oil sending unit, none of that helped me. so i had to do it, it just would run, here is my post regarding that situation, needless to say i was very pissed.
