Message: I have a 2004 SLT Plus Club Cab 4x4 with a 4.7 and 5spd manual tranny. When it comes to racing people on the street, I usually beat them off the line in first gear, but with the Dakotas being geared so low, I usually end up losing because I have to change through 4 gears to get to 5th. Or I get a slight rolling start in 2nd gear and then waste them, but rolling starts are cheating, aren’t they?
For all of you that have manual trannys, how do you waste people in street racing at a traffic light? I need some tips.
On a different topic, I just got a straight-pipe dual exhaust put on this weekend. No more muffler, and man you should hear how this V8 roars!!!

Message: Why are you racing on the street and endangering everyone else around you. Besides that it is illegal, if I ever got hit by some jackass racing from light to light, he wouldn't have to worry about going to jail, because I would put him in the morgue!
They make race tracks for racing, streets are for DRIVING!!

Message: No need to worry - street racing only occurs at traffic lights where we are first at the light and there is no one in front of us down the road.

Message: Ok - I promise I won't street race anymore. Everyone has made some good points. There is a track a couple miles from my house (Indianapolis Raceway Park) and they allow people to race their street cars for $15 per time down the strip. So I will go there from now on. Can anyone help me with some tips on what gear to start in, when to shift, how to get off the line ok, etc? Thanks.

Message: Yeah - $15!! And if you want to be a spectator it's $7 for the night. Ripoff! But I guess that's what we have to pay to race street cars in the "Racing Capital of the World."

Message: i dont care who you are, everyone has at least tried it once,if you are racing from light to light, you have the right of way,and if people turning in the road need to look before they go on to the street,i look before i turn onto the roads.
if you see cars/trucks flying down the road dont pull out on the road simple as that, actually if you think about it they are the dumb ones.

Message: NITE WOLF, we'll all remebber you're STUPID response when your mom and dad have a brake failure, or get distracted at a light or stop sign. Let's not forget that the racer may lose control of their car due to someone else and T-bone your mom and dad. But hey, your mom and dad will be dumbasses for being at the wrong place at the wrong time...RIGHT?

Message: Had a friend that was turning right on red out of a McDonalds. He looked .... nothing coming in the 35 mph zone. By the time he got to 15 mph, a 'street jagoff' rearended him, pushing him into the other 'street jagoff' and all three went into opposing traffic. No fatalities ... six people in the hospital. The two 'racers' are currently in jail. And two of the victim drivers had full-tort insurance. The two that are in jail were sued (and lost) to the tune of $250,000 each. They lost they're houses, cars, savings, everything. AND .... there are civil cases pending against them that will probably result in their future wages being garnished for decades.
Me -- I'd much rather pay the $10 at the local track.

Message: What about simply accelerating quickly up to the speed limit in a controlled fashion. Last time I checked there weren't any laws regarding accelerating in a controlled manner, some vehicles have a tendancy to accelerate quickly.

Message: well my dakota is an auto but i used to have quite the passion for driving a stick. my best friend and i when i was single would do laps around this parking lot that looked like a mini race track with a oval median strip in the center. soo much fun btomsic the guys on here "preaching" as one guy put it are right. it's dangerous, be careful. i'm older now and won't do what i used to but hey, if you see a truck beside you at a light or are at the track, you're goin to need some practice time first. get a night at the track if you can to practice your 60 foot times. try launching at 1500, then 2000, then 2500 etc. and see which one give you just a touch of wheelspin without losing it. no wheelspin and usually you are either bogging or not launching fast enough. besides launch rpm you can also variate between flooring it as you launch(as you let off the clutch) or a fraction of a second after you launch. you actually don't even really need to floor it right away, just 1/2 or 2/3 throttle till you're off and have traction then WOT baby. personally i wouldn't double clutch, haven't since i used to drive dump trucks for my dad. i've had sho's and a 2000 camero ss (boy was that thing cool) and they both launched very different and you're just going to have to practice somewhere safe and as the guys here have mentioned, it's a 98% chance somewhere safe can ONLY be found at the track, especially if you're trying to do it a couple times in a row for practice. hope this helps.

Message: Story one: Two hopped-up mustangs raced down main street here 4 years ago . One killed a cyclist. Reports say speeds were over 120kph/ 75mph in a 50kph/30mph zone.
Story two: A retired cop in a CRV pulls across an intersection at night. The road has a slight hill to both sides and he can only see about 150 yards in each direction, but as he pulls out from the stop he sees no traffic. 20 feet later a Harley hits the drivers door and sends the rider 140 feet into a ditch. Rider sues cop and wins.Estimated speed of rider.....160-180 kph in a 60 kph zone.

Message: a little cheese with that whine? F it. I race the crap out of my R/T, no matter what, I am as safe as possible, and Have never been in an accident. people don't just die from street racing, they die in normal accidents too. I've been ticketed like crazy, for wreckless driving, speeding, amongst other various offenses, and it won't change my driving style. I don't care who wants to whine that its dangerous, its just as dangerous to drive in traffic on Atlanta's highways. idiots are everywhere, and not all of them are speeding. get a clue, or go away.
AS to the original question, go for a higher gear ratio, it'll get your a$$ moving faster....
