Subject: Check engine light transmission problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 dakota with auto. xmission. 5.2 liter engine. 117k miles. No previous problem with the xmission. Had it serviced last at about 80k. Don't tow or haul much just highway miles for the most part.
Two days ago as I turned into the driveway there was a very brief, 1 second at most, 'shudder' sensation. I thought it was the engine but it was so brief and transient that I can't really describe it in further detail. At almost the same instant as the shudder the check engine light went on. I went to auto zone and had them put the computer on it. The code was a P1673, all they could tell me was that it was transmission related. Now, two days later, the truck can barely move from a dead start. Once you get out of first gear it shifts normally and all seems well. There are no leaks that I can see and the xmission fluid looks and smells ok. I am hoping that there is a sensor or some electronic problem as I am not in the position to replace the xmission and I depend on the truck. I was wondering if anyone could elaborate on the computer code or the xmissions behavior and perhaps take a shot at the cause?
Thanks in advance.

Message: i just had a problem with my tranny, it ended up being an output sensor for the tranny. it wouldnt shift through the gears, or it would stay in 2nd. that might be whats wrong with yours. if the check engine light comes on, its usuailly a sensor

Message: i have to agree with prple-gas,
It's a $19 sensor that goes on the driver side of the transmission. It's the last speed sensor before the Transfer case.
The parts guy at the local dodge dealer told me that this was a hot selling item. Had a bunch in stock.
