Subject: 91 Rear end question

Message:
Hi,
I have a 91 Sport 4x4 . First off, what rear do I have, or were there options? Also, were all the rears the same, Like v6, 2wd, etc. in 1991. I have a bent axle tube, and need to know what I can and can't get at the junkyard. Thanks in advance

I could be wrong but I believe that you have a 8 1/4 axle. I don't think the 9 1/4 axles were put in Dakota 4x4's until 92. Never the less, 10 bolts on the cover 8 1/4 , 12 bolts on the cover 9 1/4. With your truck being a 4x4 you will have to stick with the same ratio so it will match the front,I'm guessing 3.55 there.

87-96 8 1/4 dak 4x4 a direct fit,
you,ll have to check gear ratio
3.55s are the common ratio, but it could have 3.92s or 3.21s

you can change just the tubes or tube, the tubes are pressed in to the center section

i have a rear housing i,d sell if you can,t find one local

What vern said. I have worked on, repaired, and rebuilt several Dakota rear ends including the infamous Gen I/II 1991 Dakota. Everything Vern said is correct. Just never seen a 3.21ratio in a Dakota?
I have a stock 3.92 rear end in my 91 and its a 2WD V6. The gear ratio is printed on a sticker under your hood towards the front.

of a 3.92 They tell me it must be the same?
