I just bought a 40 series flowmaster w/3" inlet 2.5" duals out. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what would be the best way to run the pipe to get a deep smooth sound and avoid cackle?

I have a flowmaster 40 series with single outlet and it sounds damn good. I kept the single because I hate the donkey dicks hanging out the back of every other truck I see. If I were you I would just get the pipes swept to the passenger side just like if it was single only with two. Mine doesn't give anything but smooth sound, no cracking or popping like some other trucks.

Just did the flowmaster 40 series on my 04 4.7 QC today. 2 1/2 single inlet, dual 2 1/2 outlets. Ran them out the sides behind the rear tires. Similar to stock, but one out each side. 3" stainless 45* reversed tips. I could not run them out the back and get them to look good due to body lift and trailer hitch.
It is a bit loud on start up, quiets a bit once warm and idle drops. It's also loud when accelerating up to about 30 mph if I get on it. Then it seems to quiet out at higher speeds/ rpm's. My wife noticed it being louder, but she doesn't know what I had done. But only noticed it like I said, when accelerating up to about 30 mph if I get on it.

i have a 40 series 2.5 in dual 2.5 outs running behind the rear wheels, at 45 degree angles. It sounds great with a good roar if i get on it, but nice and subtle at highway speed. If i let off of it and let it hold me back at 3k rpm, it has a very nice muffled crackle, but it is certainly not obnoxious or anything like that. the 40 series sounds great anyway uou do it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I am going to run it out at 45's behind the tires on both sides.

Got the same thing you got Jamie, 3"in/dual 2.5" out. I love it. The shop welded it to my stock piping, and ran 1 straight out and the other around the spare tire. I like the look of it going out the back. If you're thinking of towing tho, I wouldn't recommend it.

Why did you run 3" inlet? The stock exhaust on my 04, infront of the stock muffler, is less than even 2 1/2 I believe. Just curious.
Also...did you all, the ones with exhaust pipes, get mandrel bent set ups from your exhaust guys. I'm pretty sure I did not, pipes get narrower at bends, and wonder if I just got screwed. The sound, I think, is great! Like a 60's / early 70's muscle car. My wife and daughter keep asking why it's so loud, I say " I don't know." LOL

Not to hijack the thread but... I have a 00 cc 4x4 auto 4.7L (3:55 LSD) and I just purchased an original (not delta flow) flowmaster 40 series. My question is, how loud will it be?? Its a single in/out 2.5 inch, and I will use the stock piping including the tailpipe (for now) I have a dynomax super turbo now, and its too quiet :-) I want some noise, I just don't want the new muffler to be cop attracting LOUD...

Thanks for the input :-)

I posted this in the members forum for daffy. But since I went through all the trouble I'll post it here too.

Right click on the video. Select "save as" and save to your hard drive. Then you can play it at will. It's about 6 megs.

It's me romping on some desert trail (where people ride Quads and motorcycles). It is a good demo of the sound of a Flowmaster. And the video is funny just listening to the things my friend says as he tries to hold the camera :-) He sometimes thinks he's going to die when I romp hard.

Its not how you run the pipe as much as the size you select that will make your truck cackle. Changing your exhaust to the point the engine is running lean is what makes it cackle.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Or letting COLD AIR come back in makes it pop like that too. Like running SHORT pipes or having a leak somewhere typically before the muffler.
