Subject: Open element problem IP: Logged
Message: I just got my edelbrock 14" open element air cleaner housing last night and ran into a snag. It isnt exactly a tight fit between the TB and housing assembley. In the instructions it says I should use a carb gasket between the two. Where can I get this. Also, at lower RPMs I notice a whistling, is that normal. It does sound a hell of alot better though at WOT.

Message: mine wasn't exactly a tight fit either. take the housing and use plyers or something and bend in on it all the way around until it fits tight. thats what i did and it is ok now. mine also has alittle whistle noise now to.

Message: It gets worst. The filter housing with the wingnut on top sticks up further than the stock setup up. When I ease the hood down it doesnt want to close. I remedy this by dropping the hood from about about a foot up from the closed the position. This closes the hood alright but today I noticed I had three small dimples sticking up in my hood. They are from the wingnut and the stud. I am pissed. My hood looks like $hit now.

Message: know what you mean there. mine did that too. i had to tie wrap my radiator hose to the ac lines to hold it down alittle so i could use the smaller spacer, now it has plenty of clearance and doesn't touch the hood.

Message: The whistling is normal. Just the design of the TB. The oe airhat cut down on a lot of that noise.

Message: i have a spacer on mine that joins the chrome housing to the t.b. i got the kit from autozone, it had 2 spacers in it. i used the bigger one to begin with then went with the smaller one after i noticed it hitting the hood.

Message: I had this same problem when installing my open element. Here's the easiest setup I've found.
1) When you purchase the edelbrock open element don't drill out the hole for the crankcase breather. Putting a hose there will just make you curse a lot when it keeps coming off and you have to remove it every time you pull off the air cleaner.
2) Purchase a crankcase breather from spectre, moroso, or whatever and replace the breather hose with this. (If you already installed the hose fitting on the cleaner you can seal it off with a little baggy and a hose clamp, it doesn't look as bad as it sounds and it keeps dirty air from getting sucked though the inlet)
3) There is a set of 4 black spacers sold by spectre for like 5 bucks that has one that fits perfectly on top of the throttle body and leaves plenty of room for the heater hose, etc.
4) make sure it fits by closing the hood slowly, trim off any of the stud you need to....or trim it really short and buy one of those cool wingnut replacements. ( I dound one with a dodge logo on it at pep boys for $3)
And if you want to get rid of the whistling you'll have to cut off the raised portion from around the opening on the throttle body.
