Message: I rubber strap wrench might work. I have found a large set of slip jointed pliers work well if there is enough room. If you only have access to bottom od the filter go to an auto parts store and ask for a filter wrench, they make various sizes. I had to buy a special "filter wrench" for my daughters Toyota Supra. Good Luck and Happy Grease Monkeying.

Message: If you're talking about removing the filter from
a 4.7 V8, it is a real mess. My 02 4.7 4X4 has
about a 6 inch hole to work through. Best way I
found to help with the mess is put a lot of rags
under the filter first.
Engineers, you gotta love em! You can bet they
don't change their own oil and filters.

It's even better on my wife's Taurus: The oil filter is directly ABOVE the exhaust manifold. That means EVERY TIME I change the oil, I get a few days of blue smoke. It almost seems as they stay up at nights coming up with the bizarre places to put the oil filter.

Message: I have an 03 4.7L, and just changed the oil. I found a strap wrench virtually impossible to maneuver in the tight space. However, you can get a kind of wrench which fits over the end of the filter. I think these filters are 93mm in diameter. You put it on a ratchet and extension, kind of like a huge socket, and the filter comes right off, without puncturing it.

Message: I have been using a two liter plastic bottle without spilling a drop every time, works great for me. I also use the wrench that fits over the bottom of the filter, the only complaint being it sometimes gets stuck on the filter.
