Subject: HELP with air intake Please! IP: Logged
Message: I'm considering doing a custom K&N air intake on my 2001 Dakota... But I have a couple of questions and concerns. Hopefully someone can help me out.
First - it looks pretty dirty around my airbox like it gets alot of dirty road water spraying up in there. That can't be good if the filter gets dirty water all over it right? That's what an airbox is for. I suppose I could try to make some kind of anti-spray shield for the K&N.
Second - there's this little doo-dad right in front of my airbox that is about 3 inches across and round. It's connected to a vacuum line that goes to the brake master cyl, and it's got a wire going to it. What the heck is it and can I move it?

Message: Yeah, you don't want the air filter getting wet as this could wash dirt through the filter and into the engine, not to mention that water getting into the engine isn't too good either.
The doo-dad is for the cruise control If I'm remembering correclty.

Message: Thanks.
So I wonder how everyone else deals with the rain then (for those of you with AIR Raid intakes / customs / etc.) I wonder if it's even going to get that wet. The truck is a few years old now and I've never washed the engine bay. It's really not that much dirt I guess after 3 years (although it could be getting washed off by the constant blast of rain water??)
Any idea how the doo-dad relates to the cruise control? and the master cyl?

Message: the ideal location is outside the engine compartment. Otherwise, your sucking hot air from the engine and exhaust manifold.(bad)If you noticed the stock and even a supercharger grabs the air from inside the fender well area thus sucking or blowing cooler air. HOT air bad, cool air good. All these trucks with air intakes in the engine bay without heat shields is just wrong. Hot air robs your HP. Your better of with a long tube holding out the window than sucking engine heat down yout throttle body.lol

Message: If you are considering a cold air intake, check out a Mopar Performance cold air intake. A little pricy (about $300) but they come with a heat shield and are very effective...I have one on my '04 4.7 and I love it....no probs with water either
