I am getting engine code p-0171 intermittently popping in. Some of the plugs have dry black soot on them and the exhaust looks the same. Looks like it might be burning some oil. The PCV valve checked ok. Any ideas?

p0171 is "system too lean" (left cylinder bank) i'm at a loss for ideas.. you might want to try some injector cleaner. the injectors may be plugged up on the left side, making the right side run rich to compensate...
